I have always had a minor growth of small (about 1/4") dirty-white
fuzzy things growing? on a piece of driftwood. Whatever they are, they
grow in spots like little tufts of cotton normally on the underside
(shaded) parts of the driftwood. They're fairly easy to remove when I
vacuum. I would assume it is a fungus but not really causing a problem.
I "think" my pleco eats the stuff, but not readily.

Agreed. You might be able to get rid of the fungus for longer periods of
time by boiling that portion of the driftwood, otherwise it just adds to
the tank's biodiversity ;~).
