Brown Patches on glass

I have noticed several ugly brown patches on the aquarium glass. They
are very hard to remove even using my Mag-Float aquarium magnet
cleaners and really ruin the appearance of the aquarium. A couple of
months ago, I have to hand scrub them using algae scrubbers but it was
still quite quite difficult and then within a couple months, these dark
brown patches returned.

What exactly are these brown patches and how to control remove them?

There are many types of algae and colours do vary. There is a red algae
which manifests itself in shades of green to brown in freshwater
aquariums. I've never read anything particular to its removal, so you
have an arsenal of algae eaters at your disposal, none of which will do
the job well enough for the front glass, leaving you with the scrub
brush. Alter your light levels and it will no doubt be replaced by
another type of algae ;~). They seem to go through a rotation, but that
fluffy green one which falls most easily to the Mag-float never seems to
last as long as the others. The last one which was absolutely
impervious to my Mag-float came off with a 4" olfa blade. It also didn't
last long, so perhaps there is some justice.

I have 2 ten gallon tanks that get brown stuff on the glass. It has
been less since I cut down of the food. I actually cut the food in
half by halting twice daily feedings and doing only one. One of the
tanks is in a position that makes it hard to clean one end and I
haven't felt like pulling the hood to clean that side. That side
still has a brown coating except for the forward end that I could
reach and scrape. This tank even has a Siamese Algae Eater. The
other tank has lots of small snails. They may be eating the stuff in
that tank.

Sorry, only guesses. Algaes happen!

I sounds as if we have a similar breed of algae. I have oto's which seem
interested in it but definitely do not control it. I just brush the glass
on every water change usually leaving one side 'dirty' in the event they are
eating more than I can tell and need the foodsource.
