I was thinking of replacing a 10 with an 18 g - hood is the same and I have
a filter I could move, but I am wondering two things. 1) If I have platys
and mollys am I really gaining capacity for more of them, or just more room
for a few top or bottom dwellers. 2) If I put a Penguin 170 on it will I
also need an airstone. On 10 g I am just using an AquaClear, no stone.
Thanxx

Sorry, just to clarify. This tank is the exact same footprint as the 10g -
just taller.

I figured that it was the same footprint : ). Platys and Mollys are top
feeders and roam almost everywhere, so they will approve of the extra
room. For the same surface area and the same number of fish, you do not
need an airstone or to change to a larger filter. More room might mean
more fish in the future, so then you might want more filtration ymmv. An
airstone is always a bad idea (for noise) and always a good idea for
adding a bit more O2 and keeping the water stirred up. If you can keep
the water stirred enough with your powerfilter, then I wouldn't worry
about adding an airstone.
