I realize there is a whole little mini industry devoted to this but in a
brief description what is the basic difference in content between goldfish,
tropical and cichlid food.

Goldfish food is often higher in vegetation. The difference between
tropical & cichlid foods is probably nothing more than extra 'filler'
type ingredients to construct cichlid pellets. Note that there are
specialized cichlid foods with more vegetation, such as spirulina. These
are all generalities. Hikari has a premium brand of cichlid pellets and
I've seen very specialized Goldfish/Koi pellets. Compare a few
containers from the same manufacturer for a better idea.
Personally, the idea is not to find the best fish food for your
application. Too many fish are omnivores and their nutrient intake can
exceed the nutrient usage. Personally, I think the best approach is to
provide a nice wide variety of foods. This minimizes situations where a
particular vitamin/mineral deficiency can occur, minimizes digestive
problems, and increases the probability that all the tank occupants will
find something of value to eat. Remember that compared to human food,
fish have a high fibre, high protein, low fat diet. The hardest part to
supply might be the fibre, due to the nature of so many of the processed
foods.
Was that brief? ;~)
