does it have a bulkhead, and if so, is it threaded or not? if not, then glue
in a short piece of pvc pipe with a cap on it. if threaded, find an
appropriate threaded pvc fitting that has a slip joint on the other side,
and do the same. you can also put in a tall standpipe, where the open end of
the pipe is above your water line.

Charles' answer was right on, but may I ask why you're not going to
use a sump? There many, many advantages to having a sump/refugium.
Keep equipment out of sight (biggest thing for me), place to put
unruly critters or picked on critters while they convalesce, grow
macro algae for denitrification, increase your total water volume,
which is always a good thing.

Just my 2 pennies.

Increasingly, it is a crime to disagree with the official version of
events, for the ruling class now frames its predatory policies in the
bogus "war on terrorism" and to disagree or not follow in lock-step
means you are either a terrorist dupe or sympathizer.
