Anyone know if emailing or something similar helps
with NG spam? If not, what can we do en masse?
Remember the rec.aquaria days when we would bring down the mail servers
of spammers and trolls by all mailing copies of "War and Peace" to them?
Ah, memories.

I am not sure how effective a report of abuse would be to an Evangelist
server admin (if that's what scglobal is). I saw a documentary here on TV
last weekend about US Evangelists and apart from the fact that women aren't
allowed into the rallies (hello? smell a rat already?) it seems like a huge
brainwashing disguised meeting of souls who can't think for themselves, or
at best can think but need absolutist answers and direction. (Gang
mentality)
Being a Buddhist myself, I don't take offence to the message they are
supposed to be imparting, but I do take offence when the "religion" is
forced by brainwashing. The greatest shame for the poster and the
organisation which got him to do it is that knowledge of the true mind
(liberation in one sense) is even more obscured. The absolutist preaching is
nothing more than preying on fear, and I think those non-evangelist
"Christians" amongst the huge diversity of humanity can easily see where
evangelism is totally off the rails. They only account for from between 8 to
22% of all people, but they are louder and therefore seem to be more.
Personally, I look at this way - the title is the indicator - I have a news
reader and fingers actuated by my mind which allow me the decision to look
or ignore it. It doesn't follow in my "faith" to ignore this guy, in fact I
choose to read - I am confident in my own teachings I've received from the
Buddah that I don't feel any sort annoyance or anything like that when I do
read it.
It seems to me to be mainly rubbish designed to drag you into Samsara if you
are unaware of the true nature of your mind. Then, there is always the
option of plonking the sender and domain with your news reader software.
I'm not worried any way - I think most of us here, apart from being annoyed,
are wise to the propganda of the mind this person has fallen prey to.
Personally, I feel empathy toward people like this, and my pain comes not
from annoyance, but the realisation that I can't help this person (only if
they want to be helped btw). The real pain comes from the knowledge that in
the grand karmic energy sense of this person, they have a few more
existences to go before they know the nature of their mind, and therefore
will dwell unenlightend for many more existences, or could, keep going
around and around in a cycle of samsara - that's what bothers me about it.
I feel bad for judging this person like this, but I do feel his pain and
wish him all the best in his spiritual persuit - I just wish it wasn't
broadcast in the manner it is, because it makes people angry and frustrated,
and gives them power they have no actual right to.
I say just ignore him and he will go away and once he realises he's debased
here you'll probably see him out on the street with a battery powered
amplifier and keyboard singing the gospels :)

Sbcglobal is an Internet service provider / telephone company. Big one,
too. And though they have a terms of service document, they probably
don't bother enforcing it against post-and-run Usenet abusers. Still,
it only takes seconds to forward an abuse report.

The message isn't what offends me, either. It's the posting of
religious crap (or any other off-topic scam) to a freshwater aquarium
group. More specifically, it's the lack of respect they demonstrate for
the other participants in the group.

However, the spammer didn't post from SBCGlobal. His IP
[172.156.120.233] is an AOL address. Luckily(or unluckily if you're an
AOL user) AOL is dropping newsgroup access. Still, a message to
couldn't hurt.

Hi Oz,
Ironically enough I find your reply to be very similar to the original
post... lost... er... lots of "religiousity".

I agree, but I don't lose sleep over it. They will either get the message
through us ignoring it or being beamed off their server.
I still feel sadness for this person who feels the need to do this all the
time, even more so at the amount of ignorance, presumtion, projection,
generalisation and, in actual fact, lack of compassion towards humanity.
Still, in the end I still think we as individual thinkers can make the
choice to just pass it by when we see it. I couldn't make any rational sense
out of it anyway and it certainly doesn't help me to take care of my fish or
aquarium ;)

You're right. I'd only looked at the question I was answering (what is
SBC Global) and not the actual IP address.

Unfortunately, that won't matter. The spammer isn't posting via an AOL
owned news service. He's posting via Google Groups. And Google,
apparently, isn't interested in being a good member of the internet
community where this sort of thing is concerned.

It saddens me that some people feel they must push others into believing in their religion. This is not against you, Ozdude. I kinda agree with you on some of your beliefs, being a pagan goddess worshipper myself. May those who deserve it be reincarnated as a tree to learn patience. Or maybe a mayfly, which lives for only 24 hours, to learn that every moment is important. Of course, they would have to be reincarnated as a mayfly a couple hundred times, but that is a story for another day.
And BTW, my guppie had babies!!! (this is a fish board)
