Hi.

Recently I've done some furniture rearrangements in my room and I now have
much more room for a larger aquarium. I have kept freshwater fish for about
5 years now and I have decided that I would like to give marine a try. I
have made a trip to my local aquarium store and found an aquarium that would
fit my room perfectly, the base has to be 40cm by 60cm and can be as tall as
I like. I have found a nice looking 170L tank that looks great. Is 170
litres sufficient enough to hold a few sal****er fish? Also, I will be
completely new to sal****er, so are there any fish that are particularly
good for beginners? I was interested in clown fish, would that be ok?

Also, the tank would be in my room (where I sleep) and so I need it to be
reasonably quiet to keep me and my flatmates happy during the night. Are
marine tanks loud? Can quiet equipment be bought?

Thanks for any suggestions/help.

170L (44gal.) is a good size beginner tank. 208L (55gal.) is what most LFSs
in my area recommend as a starter tank, but I myself have started with a
109L (29gal.) tank, and it will hold up to three small fish comfortably. so
the 170L tank should be great. As for clown fish, they are listed in most
places as good beginner fish. I myself plan to purchase a breeding pair
when my tank finishes its cycle.

This depends on how the tank is setup, but you can modify most things to
make it quiet. If your overflow is too loud, there are modifications like
the durso or stockman standpipes to quiet it down.

Lisa you should do just fine. I would recommend reading up a bit before
you begin and taking your time. I have a 5 gallon tank that I set up
after Christmas and it is doing fine. I have 5lbs of live rock, two
Mexican Turbo snails and three hermit crabs living in it with a Blue
Damsel and some orange zoanthras (sp?). It can be done a very small
scale if you would like. I am by no means a professional at this but if
you would like to go small you can search the web for Nano-reef and they
will help.
