big water changes.
This sounds like ammonia burns and your fish needs clean, dechlorinated
water and a good filter.

what kind of tank setup do you have?

sorry if this sounds a bit terse; it's hard to help without more
context.

do you have a test kit for ammonia?
In the meantime, I think 25% water changes daily would be a good idea.
Good clean water is usually half the remedy for sick fish.
Is it the edges of the fins and gills that are going black? because I
can't think of any other cause for that other than ammonia burns.
If you haven't been dechlorinating new water then the chlorine does kill
off filter bacteria as well as hurting the fish.

I could be way off here, but isn't spring water PH unstable??
Not that it would turn your fish black.

Change the water, change the water and change the water.

That is always the first thing to try.

Make sure you are using temperature matched water with
a water treatment to remove chlorine and chloramines.

Mine did that too when I first got them and didn't know how to properly care
for them (they were Walmart feeder fish). I think it was ammonia burns. I
started doing water changes every day and then the brown/black spots went
away. Although mine never stopped moving or changing their behaviour at
all. I would just change the water daily if I was you. Mine are now very
beautiful and healthy.
