View Full Version : Have my fish been watching Stargate? (humor)

Strange, strange:

I think one of my Hockey Tetras managed to open a worm hole in the tank last
night and has exited this galaxy :)

I was asleep last night, and I usually listen to a local AM radio station
while I'm falling asleep, which runs throughout the night. Any way I woke up
about 6:30 a.m. for some reason and noticed the radio wasn't playing and my
LED alarm clock's display was off.

So I jumped out of bed after realizing that my power was off. The light was
on in the hallway, which lead me to believe it was only my flat that was
suffering a power outage (the hall power is Body Corporate circuits).

So after a little checking around I went outside to the fuse box and noticed
my Ground Fault Protection circuit breaker had tripped off.

It occurred to me that CO2 was bubbling into the reactor in the tank, as
it's not dependent on electricity, and the filters, heaters and lights had
probably been off for a long period. Luckily the reactor (Tom Barr design)
is self purging.

So to cut a long story short. I got everything going again and retired to
the kitchen to make a cup of tea. I walked back into where the tank was and
noticed a noise coming out of the normally silent power-head. I reseated the
impeller and got the reactor fired again. I sat there drinking my tea,
looking for signs of stress in the fish and did a "role call" on them.

On doing this I noticed that one of the six Hockeys wasn't there, so I took
the glass cover off the front so I could search between close things and
observe/search from above; as I turned my back to place the glass somewhere
safe one of the Hockeys clear jumped out of the tank and landed on the floor
in front of me (a jump of about 2M!).

I picked it up by the tail (no net handy) and threw it back into the water,
where it resumed normal swimming.

I still could only count five and to this time can see no evidence of no.6.
I've checked the floor, behind and below the tank - everywhere and there is
no evidence of it. I don't have any other animals like cats, so it can't be
that.

I thoroughly cleaned the tank later in the day and still no evidence of it
ever being in the tank and it was definitely there when I went to bed the
night before.

So I presume it dialed up an address on the tanks star gate and went, in the
process, taking out the 240V by using too much energy :)

It's got me; perhaps I shouldn't watch TV in front of the fish - they are
smarter than they appear to be :) :)

I had a zebra danio disappear like that - out of a tiny 2-gallon hex
tank, no less! I had 3 zebras in the tank (nothing else - not even a
snail). One night it was there - the next morning it wasn't. The only
opening in the tank lid was a 1/2 inch finger hole for lifting the lid.
The filter was one of those suction-cup bubble things.

I looked everywhere for that fish - even broke down the tank to check
that he wasn't stuck somewhere. I looked all around the carpeting and
room where the tank was kept. I never did find the darn thing - no
cat, etc., either to explain the disappearance of a jumper. I figured
that maybe he died and the others might have eaten him - but I can't
imagine that 2 zebras could eat another zebra that quickly. Those
other 2 zebras lived for 3 years in that tank! Another one of life's
mysteries.

According to quantum mechanics, there is this possibility. Ever so
slight though..

I had a juvenile molly completely disappear on me one day. I presumed I
had sucked her up with the gravel cleaner and dumped her in the garden
where my cats would have made a quick meal. I felt so guilty.

Three months later I found her mummified remains on the glass ledge
where the glass condensation tray rests and slides open. She had managed
to jump up to that ledge and got stuck! The body had become essentially
freeze dried. A perfectly formed fish, with no eyes and no fluid
content. How?

I do remember, though, a rather fishy smell emanating from the aquarium
for weeks, but could never track down the source. Presumed it was the water.

Her name was Spotty and I even gave her a burial in the garden, albeit,
three months late.

It's strange how "fast" the biology can work sometimes in a tank.

My current serious theories are that it's either expired when the power went
(it was off for about an hour going off the timer for the lights) and my
massive Mystery Snail devoured it, skeleton and all, or it jumped through
one of the access holes (about 1cm) and has actually ended up under the
stand.

I can't move anything because that would mean bringing the tank down. And
after cracking the bottom of a 4 footer by messing with the stand I'm not
going to do it with this one ;)

If it's the latter then I guess eventually there will a smell as it
decomposes and the mystery will be solved.

They have (the Hockey Sticks) been really darting about in the tank in the
late afternoon recently and I keep expecting a spray of eggs from a couple
of the chasees, but so far nothing. Boy can those fish move! They originally
come from the upper reaches of the Amazon/Rio Negro (Peru) I believe, which
is torrential water, so it explains somewhat, their tail down swimming and
the massive speed they can get up. They are very strong little buggers and
it's not the first time one of them has just leapt out of the tank for no
reason ;)

Time will tell I guess - or perhaps not? LOL....

Dammm... I thought that only happened to me. I still can't find that
guppy!!! I found the other dead fish but still no guppie

February 15th 05, 09:18 AM
I once have a middle sized angelfish disappeared on me overnight. It
is amazing how fast a dead fish can get devoured.

not from a small fish, I shouldn't think.

I had a weather loach escape - didn't notice for a couple or three days
as they are very good "hiders". I knew they were escape artists, so I'd
covered the access holes with stiff card - only, sadly, taped at one
side. These days I weight the card, too.
ANYWAY. I eventually found him under the chest of drawers the tank sits
on, dry and brittle as a twig (and weirdly furry, he'd picked up a lot
of dust while his slime coat was still wet). Not a hint of a smell, even
when you gave a good sniff.

oh, you should see my white clouds, the colours at the moment are
absolutely extraordinary, and the displaying is very cool. They've
developed salmon pink dorsal stripes which I've never noticed before.

Apparently so; still no sign of it, so I presume the snail ate it, and it's
a snail about the size of a 1/2 tennis ball ;)

I guess if it flipped it's way under the stand I'll find out eventually by a
rancid smell, so time will ultimately tell.

I just hope it doesn't come back one night with a symbiot inside of it :)
LOL!

Perhaps not, but there is another way I will be able to tell and that's if
there is an increase of cockroaches underneath the tank - I have buried a
couple of fish I lost when I started, out in the back garden, and over here
in Oz we have these giant native bush cockroaches (harmless and not disease
carrying like the American and German little ones), which have congregated
around where these fish were buried.

The other night I was out there and the path lights were on and I noticed
this congregation of these roaches - they were actually digging into the
earth to get to the two fish in the ground.

They fly too and occasionally when the weather gets hot, as it is now
because it's summer here, they make it into the house. If they start
congregating at one spot, then I suspect I'll find the missing fish;)

The sound like happy boys! The males get this colouration apparently.

There used to be two of them but the larger one "mounted" the smaller one
and interlocked with it, and the smaller one just floated to the surface one
day, expired - I presume it ate that too - and I thought I was witnessing a
Mystery Snail mating ;)

Funny you should mention that actually. Whilst I was in the middle of trying
to fathom out how to catch my sickly female Serpae today, I was staring at
the filter and it occurred to me that it may be between the sponges in the
lower chamber.

There was always one Hockey that used to get trapped between my old corner
box filter and the tank glass, in the old tank, and once it was there for
almost a week without me realising, so nothing's impossible in this
situation.

I'll check tomorrow when I break the filter chamber open for a media check,
but I'm pretty sure it's left the planet ;)

My AppleSnail killed of all of her sisters in snailhood much the same
way. I wasn't sure what exactly was going on until I watched her kill

not fully stocked, but at the least partially socked. which, by the way, i
fully expect to have returned to me in a prompt fashion. in exchange i
might be willing to give up all those missing jig-saw puzzle pieces that
