My Betta has small white spots on his head. They do not appear to be on his
body and he seems his usual self. These only appear to have come about
today.

Is this ick?

Thanks for any advice.....

Could be. If it is, they'll grow to about the size of grains of salt
and then disappear. More could appear elsewhere on him or on other
tankmates if there is a source of stress or if you're unlucky. Test his
water and make sure there's no ammonia or nitrites and that the pH
hasn't shifted since your last test. Also watch temps and be sure
they're stable because a sudden chill is a common cause of an ich outbreak.

Change some water - whatever your fish is used to - and make sure the
tank or bowl is clean and as healthy as possible. Correct any ammonia
or nitrite problems. A few water changes will gradually fix pH. Then
watch and see whether it goes away. If it gets worse instead of better,
you may need to use a medication.

Actually I was about to ask a similar question about a zebra danio of mine.
I noticed a white spot appear on his head yesterday and I pulled him to a
separate 5 gal tank last night while I did a 25% water change the last two
nights. I noticed that this morning the white circle on his head (which is
much
larger than a grain of salt) now is dark around the edges and is no longer
very white. I also noticed that he looks to be missing a scale which I
noticed
about the same time. I had noticed him going back and forth along the glass
once or twice. I though he might have velvet disease(or whatever its
called)
but since I am new to this I don't really know. I have noticed that this is
one
of two zebra's that seems to be swollen(wasn't sure if it was eggs or if it
was
constipated or something) and I would describe him as 'stiff' when he swims
since he seemed to put more effort into swimming than the others that seem
to swim effortlessly. Can someone give me a good idea what's wrong with
my Danio?

Thanks!

I have been doing the water changes and using a medication as directed.
Seems to be clearing up slightly now, but not completely gone just yet.

If it is Ich, you'll want to make sure you finish the full dose of meds
(7 days). The Ich parasite is only suseptable to medicine for 2 out of
the 7 day life cycle. Even if you can't see them, continue to treat for
the full week.

Cool. Glad to hear he's getting "betta." The lifecycle takes more than
2 days so the spots wouldn't be gone. Once they're gone I do something
different from IDzine. Once the spots are gone I use a water change and
then one dose of medicine every third day, for a total of four doses.
That keeps the medicine around to kill any free-swiming parasites, but
is less toxic to the fish. It also works at a wider range of temps.

Try this reference from NetMax. It's very good.

http://www.skepticalaquarist.com/docs/health/ich.shtml It also has the
original reference for the dosing schedule I use.

Spots all cleared up, but continuing to treat as suggested.

Cheers!
