Hi everyone!
This arvo i came home from work and found my fantail hiding with one of his
eyes detached partially...(just the top half.) the optical nerve is intact
and i put some liquid betadine on the part where the eye was detached and
gently put the eye back in the socket....problem is, it come out a little
bit in the water...

I have the fish in a hospital tank with 1 tbs of pure salt per gallon...she
is not hiding anymore and is swimming happily.

can the eye be saved?

Thankyou!
Is there any way i can keep the eye secure in its socket till it heals??

Thankyou guys...
I tried to make a "bandage" for her.....but in the end i just couldnt do
it....the eye is swolen still, but i am going to use betadine on it every
other day and at the same time try to "convince" the eye to go back in....

Will that eventually work?

You may want to consult a vet...

I'm wondering if "vetbond" might not be handy in this case!

Might be a little rough on the fish to try it, but beneficial in the
long run???

It's a flesh "glue" that some vets use in place of stitches. My vet
helped me declaw some baby emus once using that substance, and it was
very, very nice and worked quite well to close the flesh and contain the
bleeding.

Opinions please???

There are numerous other references.
Go to http://www.google.com and type in "vetbond" in the search.

Good luck!!!

Yikes! That "liquid bandage" stuff stings like the dickens on me,
I'd not use it on a fish.

I think you're better off just keeping the fish isolated and quiet,
and keep the water as clean as you can, adding melafix now and then.
And hope for the best. Remember, if the eye is lost, the fish can
eventually adjust to that.
Good luck.

Oh well, it sounds like he is going to be ok.

I've read about this kind of thing a few times here!
Is it really that common for goldie's to lose an eye, and if so, why???

Was this a moor or other "bug eyed" goldfish?

no....it was a fantail!! My black moor is missing an eye....but that was a
"siphoning water and getting too close to the siphon" accident.

Ouch... Bummer! :-(

I was a coward when I had goldfish!
I used to remove them to a bucket when I was siphoning the tank. They
were too friendly and curious.

The clown loaches however, I could never catch the little stinkers in a
net! I'd "siphon" them into the net and it never harmed them, but the
inside diameter of the siphon I used was considerably larger than a
clawn loach. <G>

Darn. I'd have cried too! :-(

But, fish are amazingly adaptable, and it's not like he's not in a
protected environment!

I adopted a little old blind poodle that somebody abandoned in my
neighborhood. She lives on the back porch (insulated and heated/air
conditioned) when she is not in my room with me, and she is fine. She
adopted one of the kitty houses on the floor as her dog house, and
sleeps in there when she is not wandering around.

It's odd how blindness does not seem to affect animals the way it does
humans!

Do you talk to him?
He might be able to sense the sound vibrations in the glass?
