Can you put any plain old ordinary piece of a tree in your aquarium, or does
it need to be 'drift wood' what ever that means? If you can, would there be
any steps to sanitize it.

Depends on the species to a great extent (i.e. not pine, softwoods or a lot
of non bogged-tropical).
I think you're okay with things like Oak and hardwoods, but don't just throw
them in the tank weighted, as all pieces will leech something into the
water. Wood must be prepared properly to remove lignin, fungus and other
materials in the structure.
I am not an authority by any means about wood for water, as I've just
removed the piece I've had in my tank because it's been the source of an
algae outbreak, amongst other things and it will not sink, and I'm over it
;)
