View Full Version : Another disease question

I had originally posted this as a follow up to another disease question
however I thought I would post it separate since it now appears to be
completely different.

I had originally posted about a white circle that I noticed on one of
my Zebra Danio's heads. At the same time I noticed a spot on its side
that looked like it was missing a scale or something. So I had transferred
him to a separate tank yesterday. This morning I noticed that the white
circle on his head is not really white anymore and there is a black ring
around the outside of the circle. I also noticed that on his side it looks
almost like an air bubble is stuck in a deep hole in his side( I don't know
how else to describe it). He is swimming much better than he was yesterday
when he appeared to be 'stiff' however he is not eating at all and does
appear to be bloated. I'm pretty new to this and although I can recognize
a problem I have no idea what it is or how to fix it.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I figured it would be better to give you guys something to look at
so I setup a quick page with pictures. Take a look and let me know
what you think. It's hard to photograph a moving Danio even when I
put him in a small glass. Also I noticed he hold the fin behind his gill
close
to his body on the side that this is on.

Again any help is appreciated!

My Chinese Algae Eater had this problem - almost the same except there was a
white scar ring around the perimeter of the wound. I think the CAE might
have had a mechanical accident in the first place which caused the open
wound (catching on a wire wrap around the base of a bunch of plants), but
then it got infected. Eventually he just stopped, rolled over on one side
and died.

I am not saying this will happen to the Danio, but it's what happened to my
slightly more sensitvie fish. I suspected a bacterial infection of the wound
too, so I guess you are doing okay if you've mediacted the water it's in.

Have you dosed with salt? I think if the slime coat repairs, then there is
less chance of this wound getting infected by some bug and bringing the fish
down.

I hate it when things like this happen to fish.

Yeah. That sure looks like an infected wound and subsequent systemic
infection. You can disinfect the wound itself by dabbing it with a q-tip
dipped in mercurichrome. However, whether the fish can beat the
systemic infection that is making him swell is another question. You
need an antibiotic in the water - maybe kanamycin or Maracyn - and lots
of luck.

If he gets badly swollen - pine cone like - it is kinder to euthanize.

Well actually the fish is doing much better than he was before. I have had
him in a 5 gal bucket that I use for my old tank water. I have been
changing
his water daily with a 50/50 mix of clean water and tank water since my
Nitrite
levels were fairly high(cycling a new tank). The open sore on his side has
lost
it's bubble and is much smaller and he is not as bloated and is swimming
much
better. He still has the spot on his head that hasn't gotten a lot smaller
and I have
noticed his color is fading. I also have a problem getting him to eat. He
doesn't
really like to come to the surface and will only pick at food off the
bottom. This
isn't a big deal as I put extra food in the bucket since he doesn't eat much
and I
change the water daily anyways. Actually I am surprised that he is doing so
well
since I don't have an extra heater yet(getting one this weekend) so keeping
the
temp right is a little tricky. Hopefully everything will turn out ok and I
can put him
back into my tank.

Thanks for all the advice!
