I'm UK based but going to be in NY, LA and Vegas for a few days each
shortly.
Anyone recommend fish stores in these areas to stock up on test strips,
medicated food, anything else interesting?

If you mean where can you get stuff cheap? LFSs are pricey on most stuff. A
bottle of water conditioner is much more that say at Petco or PetSmart (our
big pet superstores). I cant remember which on of these is the bigger
store, but one has huge Trop. Fish departments. Lots of tanks. I think its
PetSmart. Check it out. I think Vegas has the same stores we have here in
Los Angeles, not sure about NY, never been there.
I am sorry to say that I only go to my LFS when I need stuff in a hurry. I
would like to suport them more but I can save much more at the discount
places and bigger pet super stores.
When your in Vegas go check out a place called "Pro Bass Shops". Its brand
new and just south of Vegas on I-15 and right next to Casino /Hotel called
the Silverton. I am not sure if your into fishing but they have huge fish
tanks, one stocked with bass that they use to teach you how to fish. A guy
gets on top of the tank and throws different types of lures, plastic worms,
crankbaits etc.... Its like heaven for rednecks :-). There is also a huge
salt water tank where the store conencts to the Silverton Casino. They also
have hunting stuff.
Another really fine Reef tank is at the Mirage Casino, and is located right
behind the Check-In desk. Easy to get yourself lost looking at this one for
a long time.
Have a good time

If you know you'll be at a particular physical address why not order online
and have it delivered to the location? Ken Menard of www.kensfish.com has
some great deals on fish food and I would recommend checking out his site.
He's always been good to me.

Depends where you'll be. In NY, if you're on Long Island, the best
shop is a place called Magic Isle Aquarium. I know the owners, and
they drive to the city each week to personally pick the highest quality
fish instead of just shipping them in.
In LA, try Yo's Aquarium on Santa Monica Blvd. Not much to look at as
a store, but great fish selection.

I havn't been to LA in 14 years but the Aquarium Stock Company
in Hollywood had the besty eye-candy while Jim's Er^Hxotic Fish
in Manchester was may favorite store. I was there every lunch
hour when I worked around the corner in 88/89.
Keep in mind stores barely make money on fish they make most of
it on dry goods, so the best bargins are likely to be had
from mail order stuff.
When I moved to California I asumed the fish stores would be bigger
and better but that didn't seem to be true. Of New York and LA I
think Toronto has the best fish stores. Of Toronto stores The
Menagerie is by far and away the best. There isn't a fish alive
that Harold can't get for you. I'm pretty jaded and have seen
most every fish around - I thought - every tie I go in there
he's got stuff I've never seen or only see once eevry 10 years.

I probably used the wrong subject line for this. Whilst I'd LOVE to be able
to bring fish back, we're UK based and I'm not sure customs would approve.
We're looking to buy high quality food, test kits, odds and bobs that we
don't see here in the UK or which are much more expensive (test kits being a
case in point). The mail order site is great but as we're only in each area
(Manhattan in NY, B.Hills in LA and the strip in Vegas) for 4 days each, how
reliable is the mail service? I'd hate to buy a load of stuff only for it to
be delivered the day after we left

Mail order is quite reliable, depending on which method of shipping you
choose. I'd say order from England in advance so that your products are
either waiting for you at the hotel or wherever it is you're staying.
