View Full Version : Feeding peas...
Katra

Before I came here, I'd never heard of the practice of feeding cooked
shelled peas to fish. ;-)
What is the purpose of this please?
What does it do for them?
I will also be googling for this, but I'd like some input from the group
as well.
Are canned peas ok? I know that regular canned peas are loaded with
salt, but I can get "no salt added" canned peas here that are very, very
low in salt. The salt content would not be any higher than fresh frozen.
Would a betta benefit from this?
Right now my betta is my only fish, and he is tanked with two mystery
snails.
Boy those snails are beautiful! And just as greedy as the betta. <G>
They come sailing to the top of the tank within minutes after I add food
to the water, and happily scarf down the FD bloodworms as eagerly as the
betta does! They also like the flakes and betta pellets as much as the
fish does.
Would the snails eat peas?
The guy at the fish store mentioned feeding shelled snow peas instead of
regular peas (aka "sugar snaps") Told me he has a customer with a single
pet snail, and it got huge in no time eating those...
Thanks!!!

Hi Katra.
Basically peas acts like a laxetive if the fish is constipated, but other
than that, the fish really like them.
i honestly wouldnt add canned peas because they add preservatives and
additives to them...and besides....you can get frozen peas very cheaply!
Bettas are really carnivores and he/she will just look at them and turn
their nose up at them.....
Your snails might like them i think....i suppose they do like alot of
things!!!

And frozen peas would probably be better since I can just thaw out 2 or
3 at a time. Good idea!

Heh. No wonder he loves the bloodworms so much!
He does eat the betta floating pellets and flakes as well tho', but I
can tell he adores the BW's.

Make sure you shell the peas first. I run my frozen peas under luke warm
water to thaw the shell and the squeeze out the core. I also break them up
if they're large peas. You don't want the fish to choke on a shell or large
pea.

Yes, thanks!
I saw that general idea from the other posts.
I'll have to offer some to the snails just for grins. ;-)
It's surprising that snails actually have a little bit of personality!

I love my snail! He's new, but I can't figure out how to get treats to him,
as GF hogs them all.
I'm thinking of getting him an air stone - I read that they like to play in
those.

Mine just wander all over the tank. I do have an airstone, but it's sunk
into the bottom of the vertical tube that runs the undergravel filter.
The Betta is not a very fast eater, so the snails get plenty :-)
The snails are pretty aren't they? I have one gold and one ivory.

I am just fascinated by him. I pulled the little guy out of the water 3x's
the first 3 days we had him though. I was sure he was dead - especially when
he was floating. Thank heavens for www.applesnail.net. Do you add any
calcium to the water?

I'll have to check that site, thanks! :-)
No, we have LOTS of limestone in our water already, so I presume they
are getting plenty of calcium......
I love they way the "glide" around with all their feelers waving about.
They look like big fat water fairies!

Just looked over that site thoroughly. :-) Excellent, thanks!
I did not know that they were not hermaphroditic! No wonder mine never
laid any eggs in the past.....
I have one ivory and one gold. I'd love to find a blue one!
The ramshorn variety are growing in our river here, probably compliments
of someone's aquarium. They are numerous tho' and back when I was in
college, I'd collect them when I went snorkeling in large numbers and
transport them to Temple where I was living and sell them to the pet
store for 25 cents each. They were happy to get them and sold all I
could bring in! I usually collected 100 or so at a time. There are
hundreds of dead shells on the river floor so I had to hunt around the
bases of the submerged Tarot plants that line the river.
I've not collected them in years! I did not realize they were a variety
of Apple snail...
Thanks again for that site!

It's great, isn't it? Especially enjoyed the part about supergluing bits on
to their shells if necessary.
And I'd love to find a blue one too.

Speaking of adding calcium to the water for their shells...
What are those dissolving "weekend feeders" made out of? I'm betting
it's calcium carbonate, so maybe dropping one of the small ones into the
tank periodically would give them supplemental calcium?
I know when I had them for tadpoles, the pond snail that came with the
toad tads sure liked them.

I read to feed peas to my fish..OK, I buy some organic frozen peas and cut
them up to feed. Whew, it's like dessert to them, they LOVE them. What a
kick! thanks from my fish. Great entertainment.
