View Full Version : What would you do?

My neighbor won a fish in the same school carnival we did. They bought 5
more, and put them all in an old 29g tank they revived from the garage.

3 dead so far. I doubt they let the tank establish enough. Their child told
me today about their situation, and I told him to ask his Mommy if she
wanted me to help.

If she said yes, and you were me - what would you do to get her tank
properly functioning ASAP?

TIA,
A

immediate partial waterchanges and not to add anymore fish, the tank is
stocked with just 2, so they should really find a home for that other one
because 3 would be pushing the limit in that size tank. If i were in your
shoes, id do an immediate 50 percent waterchange (makin sure the temp of the
new water matched that of the tanks water and that it was dechlorinated) and
then id stop by each day and check on the fish and if someone is acting
abnormally id do an emergency water change. Then make the people do weekly
waterchanges after the tank has cycled. And educate the people on the
cycling process here is a good site with articles http://fins.actwin.com

Water changes and have them get some Bio-Spira to cycle the tank quickly.

No more fish in the tank.

Do you have any established media (gravel, decorations, extra filter
padding) from a tank at your house to help seed their tank? After
getting one tank started thats how I started the other eight tanks in
my house. It works very well. I even started a tank for my sister
like that, I have two HOB type filters on most of my tanks (and some
extras of the same type that I keep in a storage container for
emergency purposes) I pulled an extra filter out of storage (maybe you
could have her purchase the same type of filter that you have) took a
healthy filter cartridge out of one of my tanks and my sis had a cycled
tank no problems at all : )

Thanks to all who replied.

I'm hoping I see her outside today so I can offer help, and save her poor
fishies.

"Hello new neighbor! Would you like some of my bacteria?"

Water changes is what I had in mind too, plus giving her some media from my
tank. I run dual filters, plus I've been thinking about adding a third.
