I live in the UK. Last year I had a visit from a heron and he cleaned out
all my goldfish.
so since then I have rebuilt my pond and made it bigger so I can switch over
this year to Jap Koi Carp, I have put in a larger better filtration system
and pump, But my only fear is that dammed Heron, so if any one can sagest a
way to stop his visits this year especially after I restock with koi I would
be grateful.

Some suggestions for herons that
have worked for pond keepers are
- motion activated sprinker systems, setting two
in a cross pattern
- electric shock fence barriers
- a series of wires strung above the pond making it hard to land
- netting the pond
What works for you will depend on how your pond is situated and how
your yard is set up.Herons need some landing room as they have a wide
wing span but they can land away from the pond and walk in. They like
to stand and watch for their prey to swim by but they can float around
like a duck if needed.
For my pond having two labradors on guard duty took care of my heron
visitor. But it also helped that I was home and able to eject the dogs
from the sofa and out the door to do their duty ;-)

I've had YEARS of experience with herons. We see them here about year
'round. The only thing that we found (other ponders I know in my area) that
worked was to NET the ponds with a fine bird netting. Once herons get a few
meals at your pond they will come back continuously. Some people may
suggest those motion spray things - but the herons will learn to come up
BEHIND them and so avoid being sprayed and startled. The nets also keep
out the other fish predators such as bullfrogs, snakes, King Fishers and
snapper/mud turtles. Just my 2¢ worth. :-)

The short version, clutter up the landing area. A heron can have a
6' wing span and can land and walk over to the pond, but won't land in
an area where something will touch it's wings. Some have used
overhead wires. I (With my wife's help.) turned my yard into a
junkyard of ornamental windmill, flags, wind chimes and flower pot
holders with a few plants like 6' dwarf maples and Miss Huff lantana.
This is my most vulnerable time of the year, because I just cut the
lantana brush left from last year's growth, but I suspect the taller
structures like the gazebo and my neighbors 10' fence (basketball
half-court) adjacent to the lantana bed discourage the heron from
landing in that corner of our small yard.

Hal

So tell us windbag, did you get in the sack with this here Jabriol and

You lost me. I walk up from behind my sprinkler, but I still have to get in
front of it to get to the pond. If people read the directions and have the
motion sensor pointed at the pond, I would think they would be fine. ~ jan

Ooooh, she had it too close to the pond in that case. Kind of like that
heron video BV has a link to on his website, where the fish string is too
close to the pond and the heron just snaked it's head under. Gulp!

Yes, Carol. I do nothing all day but sit by the window and watch the
pond. The dogs are kept by my side at all times. I employ a shopper to
do all my grocery shopping. I haven't taken a bath or shower in, oh,
five years. I haven't taken a vacation, I haven't seen my kids sports
events. Why I even skipped the twins' graduation. And in all that time,
Carol, the heron NEVER came back.
And I will never, ever net my pond, just to tick you off. Hordes of
snakes, dozens of bullfrogs, platoons of herons and kingfishers could
arrive at my pond and CLEAN it out and I will never net my pond. Never,
ever, ever.

You know, I am just kidding (except about the dog).
I did have someone tell me in CA State law says it's legal to protect your
livestock?
Also, If it is legal to use an electric fence. I guess it would be okay to
use an electric koi. If you took some of the floating koi that are supposed
to deter herons and hooked them up to the fence wire with a pin that pulled
like a grenade to make the conection after he had the koi out of the water.
Anyone have a link to the actual federal law?

The pellets are tiny and are only effective for killing small
varmints, like rats at close range. I wouldn't even shoot a snake
with one that would be cruel. (I'd kill the snake with a stick.) I
feel the same about the heron. If I were to shoot one it would be
with something that would kill it, not wound it to fly away and die
somewhere someone else could watch it die. That someone else might
be more sensitive than I, plus he might call the Wildlife people.

Ours didn't. They came as soon as it was light enough for them to see,
before we were even awake most mornings. They also came back around

Carol, you sooo live in the wrong area to have ponding as a hobby, I
commend you on your tenacity!
Below is only a recommendation for those to whom it applies, but if you
have the ponds close to the house or fencing, I've gone to some ponds where
the netting is up high, so one just walks right under, doesn't interfere
with pond plant growth or working in the pond that way. Course it takes
many sheets of it to get it up like that and than down to the ground around
the far edges, so Mr. Heron can't walk under also. ~ jan

## We considered something like that but chose the lower route. The nets
are about 24" above the water surface since it's draped over those wire
garden fences.

Carol, Carol, Carol....
Irony
The term irony is derived from the Greek eiron (dissembler), and
denotes that the appearance of things differs from their reality,
whether in terms of meaning, situation, or action. That is, it is
ironical when there is a difference between what is spoken and what is
meant (see verbal irony ). what is thought about a situation and what
is actually the case; or what is intended by actions and what is their
actual outcome (see dramatic irony.)
In stable irony there is a constant perspective from which to perceive
the underlying meaning; whereas in unstable irony there is no
perspective that is not itself undercut ironically. (See allegory,
satire, point of view .)
Dramatic Irony is a situation in which the reader or audience knows
more about the immediate circumstances or future events of a story than
a character within it; thus the audience is able to see a discrepancy
between characters' perceptions and the reality they face. Characters'
beliefs become ironic because they are very different or opposite from
the reality of their immediate situation, and their intentions are
likewise different from the outcome their actions will have.
Audiences familiar--like the original Greek spectators--with the legend
of Oedipus know that the hero of Sophocles' tragedy is guilty of the
evil he seeks to punish, and they can therefore fully appreciate
Oedipus' blindness as he self-righteously hunts down the murderer of
Laius--not only blind that he is the murderer, but that Laius is his
father and that he is presently married to his own mother.
Similarly, Othello's hatred of Desdemona for cuckolding him is more
horrible and tragic because the audience knows he is deceived by Iago
and can watch every step of his error. Dramatic irony can produce comic
effects when the ignorance of characters merely makes them appear
ridiculous, or when the unintended results of their actions are
humorous.
Structural irony occurs when a double level of meaning is continued
throughout a work by means of some inherent feature such as a hero,
narrator, or persona who is either naive or fallible (a participant in
the story whose judgment is impaired by prejudice, personal interests
or limited knowledge).
In Swift's Gulliver's Travel's (1726), the narrator who recounts his
own travels is both naive and fallible: he credulously idealizes some
of the peoples he encounters despite their follies; and his judgments
are biased by conservative morality and personal pride. Narrow
conventional morality also biases Nelly Dean, the narrator of Emily
Bronte's Wuthering Heights (1847); and in Shakespeare's As You Like It,
the continuing disguise of Rosalind as the young man Ganymede leads to
multiple levels of dramatic and structural irony.

Ours had very clearly defined patterns. They'd fly over in the early
morning, feed all day in the creek to the north of us, then fly back at
dusk. I don't think they ever stopped at my pond in the morning, and
rarely before late afternoon.

Hey, I'm 6 miles from the nearest town and by a huge lake owned by the Cof E
= Gov. land full of wildlife. Besides the fish predators we also have
cranes, skinks, southern sliders and boxturtles, deer, possums, wood chucks,
rabbits, skunk, fox both red and blue, squirrels both gray and red, coyotes,
wild turkeys, loads of ducks and Canadian geese. I'm sure I forgot a few.
So yes, it's kinda like a Jungle here. :-)

With as many as we had here, and being unable to tell them apart as
individuals, it hard to say what pattern they had. We would often see one
fishing our ponds while another sat in a tree or on the garage roof waiting
it's turn (I guess). Or one would be fishing in the ponds out front while
another was behind the house picking the breeding pools clean. We'd also
see one fishing the farm pond next door (they raise cattle). It was a
hopeless cause.... it came down to selling all the fish before we lost them
to these birds, or net the ponds and pools behind the house. The King
Fishers were also a problem, but to a lesser degree. Although we never saw
a crane by our ponds - we did see them fly overhead since we're so close to
the lake.
