Hi, I am a bit confused, are Koi and Goldfish the same thing? I
understand that they are both carp, but could I breed a goldfish with a
koi? Thanx.

Koi get much larger and do much better in a pond than aquarium.
Goldfish can be kept in either. Koi are too expensive so I don't keep
them. Instead I restock with goldfish once a year and let the herons
do whatever. Some of the goldfish reach 10" in length. Not sure if
the two can breed.

No, they're not the same. They're from the same family, but not even
the same genus. Koi are true carp ("Cyprinus carpio"), Goldfish are
"carassius auratus" (which means something like "gold-coloured carplike
thing")
You _can_ breed koi to goldfish, they produce sterile offspring.

Koi and the many types of Goldies can interbreed, but their young (which I
like to call Koinkey) will be sterile.
Here is some information on Koi and Goldies...

I do the same (I actually started out with rescued feeder fish... well they
became feeder fish anyway but some have survived for many years now). But
every once in a while I cannot resist getting a butterfly koi. They are so
beautiful, graceful and don't tear up the pond. They problem is that they
have gotten so big (3 of them) that I worry about the pond being too small
for them. Some day I will have to build another pond or find a home for
them....

## No they are not the same thing. Koi get much larger than GF, too large
to keep in aquariums. Some GF also get large with age - if well care for. I
had one almost a foot long.

## Yes. I have some kind of hybrid butterfly I was told is a cross. It
reached a certain size and now the koi are outgrowing it.
GF for your pond can range in price from 10¢ feeders to the sky's the limit.
Small young Koi can be found in chain Pet Shops such as Petsmart for $2.99
and up. One day I came across 1" baby koi there for under a buck each.

## Most of our Koi are butterfly type. As they grow and I have to cull them
out I sell the regular koi off and keep the BF koi.

While Koinkey looks like it might be a word, the more precise
analogous name would be "Gmule."
But most of us are happy with koinkey.
