Is there a product to keep this stuff out of the tank, or an animal that
will eat it?

Are you reffering to the brown slimy coat that is common in a new tank
after about a month? If it's brown diatoms, then ottocynclus "ottos"
catfish will take care of it in no time. Then, when the brown stuff is
gone and the bright green algae start to appear, the ottos will start
in on that!

Nerite snails eat it better than anything I've seen.

I Googled "Nerite snails" and have only found reference to Marine Aquariums.
