Does anyone recognize what species of rainbowfish this is:

It's about 4 cm long, so probably not full grown.

It looks like a juvinile female Melanotaenia fluviatilis to me.

Sounds like a reasonable ID to me. My best guess was a juvenile female
Melanotaenia splendida australis.

Hmm, it could be, but M.s.australis is more colourful, even in the female,
and the body is usually deeper than in your pictures.

My money's still on M. fluviatilis ;)

Can it tollerate cooler water than the usual Rainbow?

It's known also as the Murray River Rainbow Fish down here ;)
