I have some holey rock in my cichlid tank, but I really like the look of the
purple barnacle shells. Would these be okay for an african cichlid tank in
addition to the holey rock? Would the fish go inside the barnacles?

It depends on the African species. Some of the Tanganyika cichlids
live in shells while at least one of the Malawian cichlids chomp up
shells looking for food.

Sarah,
I got a group of Neolamprologus brevis (shell dwellers) from Lake
Tanganyika living in purple barnacles and they're doing fine.

lake tang cichlids like shells, theyre shell dwellers :P however, lake
malawai cichlids will demolish shells searchin for food. a rule of thumb: if
it can go in their mouth, theyll try and eat it.

Cool! I've only offered snail shells to shell dwellers (I had N.
multifasciatus). Nice to know they will take other kinds of shells.
