Here is a thought I have had (no time or money to test it out) but how about
having a multi stage DSB? IE instead of having one ten gallon tank for your
DSB how about having 3 3 gallon DSB's? You can then rotate out one bed every
year. This would get rid of all the bad things in the DSB that just build up
there (controversy, I know) and still leave most of the DSB inplace and
undisturbed to keep working. You could do this as complex as plumbing the
tanks in a series, or much easer would be to make one large tank and place
smaller sand filled containers in the larger tank. It could be made fairly
simple... only drawback would be to take a little more space... but if you
got tubs that fit just so it would not take up that much extra space (now
just remember if one of you guys comes out with this type of sump.... Tre'
came up with it first!!!!). Just a thought... what do you think?

Hmm...has merit. Another benefit would be the seperation gained with
multiple vessels for critter seperation, one for macro, one with that
choc star you can't get rid of....

I have a long, narrow 40 gallon tank..I'd like to seperate it
with baffles and do something similar.
