Anyone have any experience in building tank stands? Things like where
exactly do you put the support... router out the top of the 2x4 for the tank
to recess into? put a border around the edge? I am quite good at wood
work...but I just want to make sure it doesn't come crashing down. Thanks!

Made both mine out of 2x6 let into 4x4 uprights. The 100 g tank that sits
in the room was sheared with 3/8 Bead-board on three sides, leaving the
front open for doors. The 80g that is set into the wall is only sheared on
the two sides. I built both the same size as the tank plus 1/4 inch over
all. Both tops have 26g sheetmetal (my trade) tops to protect the 3/4 MDF
tops. Also ran a 2x4 ribbon let into the 4x4 legs 1''from the bottom to
support the bottom 'floor' which gives torsional rigidity. Both tanks have
2x4 joists on 12" centers.

I built mine using the stand in this link as a model.

I covered my stand in oak plywood with some decorative trim. I put the
plywood about an 1 1/2" above the top 2x4 piece to provide a lip and my tank
rests solidly on the 2x4. I would think that routering the 2x4 may weaken
the top to much.

2x6 construction. aluminium box rails for the verticals. oak skins.
purchased raised panel doors from home depot.
don't route out the top rails. instead, make the side skins be taller and
overlap the plastic frame. looks the same, but lots stronger.
