Air pump

I checked Google and didn't see anything definitive on this, though I did see
one suggestion about mounting an air pump in an insulated shoe box that sounds
interesting.

I need a new air pump for my skimmer. Mine is a small skimmer that hangs on the
back of the tank. I had a PennPlax X-1 on it. This didn't produce enough air.
Now I have a PennPlax X-4 with both outlets hooked up to the skimmer through a
"Y" in the tubing. This produces enough air (I wouldn't want more), but it's
pretty noisy.

I can't find any documentation of the output of the X-4 -- the manufacturer's
web site just gives a tank size. This makes it hard to find an equivalent unit.
Every manufacturer claims that their units are quiet -- many of them seem to
have an odd definition of the word. This makes it hard to find a quiet one.

I'd like to find a quiet, single-outlet air pump that I can put inside the
cabinet under my tank. Any suggestions?

I've had good luck with Rena pumps. They're all I buy now. Good
airflow, pretty quiet, not too expensive.

Hi George,
Air pumps should always be located above the water
level, if you locate it below the tank and it looses power for
whatever reason it is quite likely that water will siphon back down to
the pump, water on the floor and a short circuit when the power returns
with the potential for a fire.
Noise !! place a thin sheet of foam or an old mouse
pad under the pump that usualy makes them more or less silent.

I have suspended them. Many pumps have eyelets that you can screw
them dfown to something with, I hung one on a peice of string.
Silent.

I had good results doing that with the old Whisper pumps years ago, but it
doesn't seem to make any difference with this Penn-Plax. I used to tie a loop in
the power cord and hang it up from that. The Penn-Plax has the eyelet you
describe.
