I have a 50 gallon bow front tank with approx 100lbs LR, some soft
corals, seabae anemone, pair of damsels, pair of clowns, 1 small yellow
tang, various shrimp, snails, crabs, 2 brittle stars (other smaller
stars that I have caught glimpses of which probably came with the LR).
The sand bed is about 3 inches deep in most areas (damsels keep moving
it around), and I have lots of bristle worms. The tank has been going
great for over 2 years, with the only problems being: having to
replace snails every so often because I have a mantis that I can't
find, but hear occasionally, and a patch of sand that continues to grow
a dark red algea (I guess) that I can't seem to get rid of completely,
but I remove it by hand. I have a remora HOT skimmer, and a fluval
filter (media removed), and 2 powerheads to circulate the water. I
want to improve the looks of the tank by getting the skimmer out,
possibly doing away with the fluval, and getting smaller powerheads.
I was thinking of making a sump to place under the tank. I think I
would need a rather large box to use the existing remora. I'm not
familiar with the operation of sumps. How would I get the water
to/from the tank/sump? Does a sump need lighting? Sandbed?
Any pointers, ideas, etc. would be great! Thanks
