The subject just about say sit all. My comet, about 4 years and 6" long, has
lost a about 5 or 6 scales. Plus his dorsal fin looks a bit ragged.

Any thoughts? I've been Googling, but not found much.

What size tank, how many and what type of tank mates, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate
and PH levels?

29 g, Tank mates are two really old leftover black widow terras, and a
snail. I don't have any water test kits. I change 50% weekly.

I just thought it might be a disease of some sort. He's been in a tank for
about 3 months - before that he was a pond fish. I just couldn't bear to
leave him behind when I moved.

Terras??

How big is he? Test kits are essential

Oops - Tetras :)

I keep hearing that, but we've done fine for 20+ years without one. I'll
pop over to the fish store later and get the free analysis. I've never even
done that before. :) I guess we've been lucky to never have needed it
before now. My fish always live really long, so I'm not worried about it too
much. My tetras are going on 8, and their average is 5. At that age, I
would suspect them to be extremely susceptible to any changes - more so than
GF.

Just remembered my neighbor bought a kit. So, my nitrites are 0, nitrates
are 5.0, ammonia is 0, and ph is a pain. Looks to be between 7.4-7.8.

Likely that the move caused a change in water conditions in your new
town, and it's showing up in your fish. Even if it's benign, it will
take a while for them to become accustomed to differences in PH and
hardness.

Perhaps you will get lucky. How long since the move?
