View Full Version : red tail shark - bully?

My red tail shark is chasing my yellow lab and some of my tetras
around. Not all the time but some. Doesn't bother the keyholes or
gold ram (weird combo I know but they all get along). Time to find
it another home or let them sort it out?

Red Tailed Sharks will attack anything resembling themselves and are
very territorial. They also have the habit of attacking any fish at
feeding time, especially near any food that has fallen on to the
substrate. I have my psycho Red Tail in isolation in a quarantine tank.
If it's not doing any harm to the other fish then I'd keep it, otherwise
give it a new home or return it to your LFS.

I love the Red Tailed Shark and yes, they are aggresive. I only stock one
per tank, irregardless of size, and usually keep a light bioload. They
especially do not like bottom dwelling scavengers (IME) but I have not had
any deaths or MIAs as a result from the aggresiveness.

I got around this problem by re-arranging my so that the red tailed shark
thought he had the place to him self, I moved a couple of rocks and plants
so that the RTS can no longer see the entire tank from his cave, fixed the
problem instantly.

time to find it another home. You need bigger more aggressive fish that
will fight back. It was always fun watching my firemouth and redtail go
round and round. Both about 5" long. It wouldn't surprise me if the
redtail didn't start trying to eat some of the tetras when he gets a little
bigger. Mine like feeder guppies

Hi Elaine,
First time it's belly is full and I'm missing a smaller fish or two
then it's adios RTS. Only seems to be a problem at feeding time.
On a side note... I took care of one bully in my tank. The gold ram
was a tyrant until I threw it in with my large goldfish for a few
weeks. Now it has lost it's seniority in the tank I guess and all is
well(knock on wood) ;-}
All the best,

Clever, very clever. FWIW, I've found that the Rainbow shark is a bit
more tolerant of others than RTs. The Rainbows also seem to grow larger
and take a little longer to develop the dark coloration of the RTS.
Definitely a 'ymmv' though.
