View Full Version : Where to buy extra shells for my blue leg hermits?
I bought a dozen small blue leg hermits to help keep my aquarium clean.
They are rather small. As soon as I put them in the tank, they
rummaged thru the shells on the bottom and changed houses.
Do I need to provide extra home for the hermits, so as they grow they
can have nicer spacious homes? If so, where can I buy extra shells?
Thanks

The answer is yes, hermits should be provided with new homes to grow
into. Hermits are always on the lookout for a better house. A decent
LFS should have a supply of shells of various sizes. Make sure the
shells you buy have not been painted or treated like the ones they
sell for terrestrial hermits.

Hi Jen! I have found the best crab shells are from a seller on Ebay. His
seller name on Ebay is mikestert. Great prices and has a huge variety to
pick from. Good-Luck.

If you do buy the ones at Michaels, make sure they are NOT painted,
varnished, or shellacked. Just get the natural shells.
You don't want anything "un-natural" in your reef.

Arts and Craft stores, Wal MArt and such all sell empty shells
suitable for hermits.....At the coast in the so called souviner shops
they sell mixed local shells for so much a scoop, and most are old
nassarius or cerith type shells but still suitable for
hermits......Wash em in hot water and soak em in it for a few hours
for a few days and place in sun......we boil any new shells and then
place in the sun to dry, and shake em out and if needed repeat
process.
