View Full Version : Columnaris diagnosis (Panfry goes to the Hospital)

I need help diagnosing a sick GF.
It started with a white bump on his snout a few months back, which I treated
with Pimafix/Melafix. This seemed to knock it back, but did not cure it. I
noticed that keeping the water pristine, seemed to do more for him than the
medications. But daily water changes are not an option. He's been holding
his own the last few months, but this week he broke out in little cotton
wool bumps all over and lost three or four scales.
I bought a 10 gallon hospital tank today so I can treat him separately, as
he seems to be the only one suffering. But I still don't know if it's
Fungus or Columnaris. I have PP and Fungicure, but I'd like to get his
treatment right the first time, as 10 gallons is a bit small for him.
TIA

There is no doubt a proper treatment of PP will knock out either or
what ever ailes the fish.
Your right about melafix and pimafix they cure nothing. Treat with PP,
and if its still eating, feed medicated feeds. Perhaps after a PP
treatment check for any signs of secondary infection (usually a
secondary infection goes hand in hand with a bad dose of columnaris)
so you may have to add antibiotics such as tetracycline, or maracin to
the tank water if its not eating. Water quality means a lot especially
when dealing with things like this.
Lots of luck

Thanks Roy,
I didn't think GF stopped eating unless they were dead. :) He's not his
usual piggish self, but still eating.
I tried to find some medicated food today at PetSmart, but all they had was
food for internal parasites.
