Hi,

Instead of my usual inclination to fiddle about with float valves & the
like, what I'd like to do is set up a simple manual top off system that
is a bit more elegant than dumping by hand from gallon jugs.

What I imagine is something like a small 5 gallon bucket with a manual
pump on the top. The pump would be connected to a small hose that's
clipped on the top edge of the tank. When I see it needs a top off,
just manually pump (like a beer keg) and water enters the tank via the
hose. Anyone know of anything like this?

Thanks.

Try Graingers or Northern Machine. I think they have nylon/plastic hand
transfer pumps

A bilge pump for a kayak (sporting goods store or camping
outfitter) or small boat (marine supply house) may work. The pump
I use on my kayak is compact, but moves a lot of water. It seems
to be made of all plastic (PVC perhaps), however, there may be
stainless steel clips holding the valve flappers in place. The
discharge accepts a 1" ID hose. About $20us. It's smaller than,
but similar to

I wound up leaving a small mag drive pump and 3 ft of 1/2" hose
(with 'J' fitting on the end), in a 5 gal bucket, for small water
filling tasks.

How about an inverted water bottle in the sump. Suspend and support the
bottle upside down so the neck is at the level of the water. As the water in
the sump evaporates it will expose the bottle lip, air will displace some
water until the level in the sump rises enough to stop the air transfer and
thus stop the water. There you have it, top off with no moving parts. From
the safety side the sump should be large enough to hold the entire water jug
should it suddenly drain all at once. It should also be sized so in that
event the specific gravity change is not that great.
