Hello!
I was wondering if there was any fish out there that will be safe with
female bettas (and vice versa)
thanks!

Female bettas are usually peaceful and since they don't have the long
fins, they're not a target for fin-nippers. You can keep them with just
about any other peaceful communtity fish including other female bettas.
As was discussed in another thread, small fish like young tetras and
livebearers may be eaten if they are small enough to fit in the betta's
mouth.
Watch the tank when you first add the female betta, though. Some
"females" turn out to be short-finned males!

Female bettas can be just as aggressive as the males. Little fish with
big attitudes! Thats part of what makes them such interesting fish : )
I have never had success with keeping two in the same tank at one
time. Although, I was trying to keep them in a ten gallon. I ended up
keeping one female with four cory cats. I have since been told you
will have a better chance at success if you start out with very young
girls and add an odd number (for example three or five in a ten gallon)
make sure the tank is heavily planted and has a lot of hidey
holes/caves. Hope this helps! Let us know how things turn out for
you.

Good question....I've always been told an odd number of females to males and
done it. Actually even did it with my all male guppies....anyone know why
this is the suggested ratio? I can understand more than one female to male
having seen various cases of sexual harrasment with a one on one situation.
But anyone know why this is suggested with single sex mixes or even as a
male to female ratio - ie. one male to three females? (other than lucky male
fish LOL)

What is that in gallons? The minimum amount of water for one betta is about 1 gal. They can be kept in smaller containers, but they need to be cleaned out a lot more

I like...
1. 5 small shoaling fish of one species. Small, peaceful ones that come
to mind are harlequin rasboras, cardinal tetras, black neon tetras,
glowlight tetras, gold tetras, cherry barbs
2. One interesting larger fish that is content with no other fish of its
own species (usually because it's territorial). A dwarf gourami, a
female betta, or possibly even a calm male betta would work. Some dwarf
cichlids are peaceful enough but very sensitive to water conditions -
rams or Apistogramma spp.
3. 3 of a small corydoras catfish OR 3 Otocinclus to eat algae if you
have plants.
This gives you 9 small fish that should be a compatible community with
some interesting activity.

LFS sometimes get a tankfull in. You just have to watch. Local
breeders also tend to have an excess of females if they sell to stores,
since stores sell more males.

Walmart in my area sells females all the time. They are usually much
smaller/younger than the males that are sold there. Even Petsmart has
females on occasion. If you have a local fish/pet store they may also
carry females. Oh, one other chain store comes to mind, Pet Supplies
Plus. Happy Grrrl Shopping!

When you do this ask yourself if you're ever going to breed them. If
absolutely not then by all means buy Wal Mart females or females
from any store. Nobody but Betta people know this but a tank full of
female Bettas makes a fairly unusual and oftentimes stunning display.
But, if you ever plan on breeding them it's not worth going through that trouble
and effort for petshop females. Spend the extra $5 and get something good
from a breeder. Google "betta stock shop". You can get them on Aquabid
too but they tend to be direct from Thai land. Very good fish but
shipping is high on onsey-twosey things and only makes sense if you're
getting a few.

I did not know that. Are you saying you can put the ladies in a community
tank?

I'm probably not going to breed, but I'll probably check with local breeders
anyway. There's a person who posts Chicagoland meetings and auctions on a
pretty regular basis. I'll have to pay attention next time, as I would
imagine they can steer me towards a breeder. :O It's something odd, like
Chicago Green Water"
I hate buying from the big chains, but (I've said before...) I'm new here
and can't seem to find a good LFS. The only indy's in the area are all
exclusively marine fish.

Are you in the Chicago area?
Also, yes female Bettas can live in a community tank with other fish.
The females will have to find their place in the hierarchy, so at first
there will be posturing and chasing, even a nip or two until it's
sorted out. Don't be alarmed if you see them sparring.
However, if chunks of flesh and chunks of fins are being removed, then
you may have to separate the aggressor.
Sometimes even a week's "time out" is all that's needed to adjust their
attitude. Sometimes you can have one that is so overly aggressive that
it needs tobe in solitary, or the only female Betta in the tank.

Im in a small town in Oz....My LFS does occasionally bring in female
bettas...but they plonk 4or 5 of them int a damn jar.....I just convinced
them to put bettas in a tank and when i came back there was 1 poor male
betta in a 2 gallon tank, no heater (it gets cold here) no filter.....a few
days later there was fluffy stuff growing in the corner of the tank!!!! I
mean COME ON!!!!...I show them a pic of my male in a 10 gallon and they see
how happy he is (comparet to what he looked like, hardly moving and looking
up at me with sad eyes...)
Sometimes you can't tell anyone anything...can you!

Thanks - did not know that. BAck in the '70's I heard that bettas could live
in a community tank, but I've been reading here that the males are solitary
regardless. It never occurred to me that the females had different rules.
