Lily Secrets

[Mark and Kim Smith]

Any secrets or tips to get them to grow like crazy? Last year, when
first planted, they grew fine. I left them in the pond all winter as
winter around here was mild. Everything else in the yard is growing
like crazy but the lilies are only producing small leaves. Thoughts??

My lillies have acted this way under two conditions...

1. First year they were root bound
2. Second year, I had planted them in rocks and not soil

I don't have much luck with my lilies unless I put 2 pond tabs in each
container when the pond water gets up to + 50F - some here don't use
fertilizer, but when I tried skipping the tabs one year, they stayed small
with few flowers, so it's back to the pond tabs for me. My pond water is
currently ~38F now and they haven't even sprouted new leaves yet here in SW
Ont. It may be too early yet for yours

Wait until the water warms up and use a high middle number fertilizer.
If you use a high nitrogen (first number) fertilizer you may get a lot
of leaves and few blooms.

It seems my lilies would always be root bound if I didn't just weight them
down with a big rock. Basically, I've found that a vigourous hardy lily
will usually outgrow any container in a season, and planting bare root will
guarantee the easiest access to nutrients and makes them easy to divide,
too.

I repot mine every year or every other year and use Jobes Rose Spikes cut in
3 pieces. I add more around the middle of summer, depending on how the
plant is growing and flowering.

I tried weighting mine down one year, but it didn't work well for me.
The fish ate the young shoots and the lilies seemed to want more
nutrients.

The best results I've seen was with garden soil and 6-12-6 garden
stakes applied every two weeks, but that is a lot of work so I'm
trying Once A Year 12-20-8 Aquatic Spikes this year.

Hmmmmm...I just came in from my pond and I have 18 lillys with leaves
at the surface that are new growth this year and 6 that has leaves
still from last year..........others I have are starting to push out
growth after being transplanted.......everything else is either
pushing new growth, in bud or fully leaved out, even the two cypress
trees which are usually late compared to oaks etc.

You're lilies are way ahead of mine. Mine have some reddish new leaves but
most are well under the surface. One lily behind the house has leaves just
under the surface all winter. I wish I knew the names of these plants.
Some bloom so much better than others.

Even when the days are warmer our nights are still getting pretty darn cold.

I checked the lilies out behind the house today and some have leaves on the
surface now! I can't believe how fast they grow this time of year. I just
bought Jobe's Rose Spikes and will soon be fertilizing them. :-) I break
each spike in 3 pieces - works great and a lot cheaper than pond plant tabs.
