Tall Tank Glass Thickness..

My tank is sized at 6' by 2' by 3.5'. It is made out of 15 mm glass not
toughened. Been there about 10 months now and looks absolutely great!
However, an expert of sorts came by and said this height needs a thicker
glass else I run a huge risk of the tank exploding one day and injuring
everyone in the room at that time! This has really got me scared but just
needed a second opinion as what it boils down to is setting up a new tank. A
big pain to say the least apart from from a lot of money down the drain!

I don't know what your setup looks like, but you could build the stand so
that the back, and sides are covered by the stand material, and then just
replace the front glass with something thicker. Of course that is only if
you are worried about the injury to yourself or others.

Does this tank bow outward by very much? Do you have any kids that might
decide to throw their favorite tow through the glass? If there is any risk
of the tank getting bumped into, or stress points from the stand, or
anything such as this, then I would do something about it. But if not, then
I would leave it alone. But that is just my opinion. -Chris

Sigh.. Thanks a lot fr yr advice.. Im just gonna shift to a 30'' height one!
I do believe u r right but the nagging doubt at the back of the mind is
getting very annoying!

And eventually I guess no amount of money is gonna be worth an injury. There
is no bowing I can see and no danger from any kids etc. However the tank is
in prime display area of the living room so will definitely be dangerous if
it explodes!!

I am sorry for not coming in earlier and also that I am not an expert but
here is what I know. You are in the vicinity of 3/4" and I know that is good
for 30" tall. Now I know you are another 12" above that.

Is there anyway you can contact the manufacturer? If I were you I would
likely call some people and get advice. Oceanic systems comes to mind. Also,
there is a place in Dallas that comes to mind (I can get the name if you
want.)

Another idea is to reinforce the glass. On the flip side, the oriiginal
manufacturer thought it was good.

OK, last idea. You could also pay a Civil Engineer (likely in the phonebook)
to do some stress calcculations
