View Full Version : 29G aquarium lighting question
hi. I was wondering if someone could help me out.
I want to eventually put some soft corals in my tank, maybe even an
anemone with some acompanying clowns. I don't want to go crazy and
overstock with coral, I just want to give my 29G some color. I know
lighting is very important for corals. What kind of lighting would you
suggest and what beginner corals, mushrooms, or anemonies would be
best? Right now I have the bulb that came with the aquarium. I know
nothing of lighting specs so please keep it simple.
I have a two month old 29G tank with about 30 lbs. of live rock. I
have two damsels, a cleaner shrimp, a scooter blenny, five small
snails, and two feather dusters. They all seem to be doing great so
far.
Many thanks.

It really comes down to the canopy you have. For a softy
tank, you can use VHO, PCs or T5 lighting. Buying a retro
kit will allow you to install it yourself (an easy DIY
project).
All three will support soft corals and an anemone, but I'd
recommend you let your tank mature (9 months) before getting
the anemone.
Feel free to visit my site, and check out the 29g page.

Marc, thanks for the tips.
What exactly is VHO, PCs or T5 lighting? If I go to my local fish
store will they know what I'm talking about?
I love your site btw.

orbit. 30" for a 29g, same as I have.
its 2x65 with moonlights if you do not have a canopy. Its a very nice light
for the price, and there is a mod for it to put in a mh bulb in the middle.
Might be ok for a BTA or other lower light ones. I like it because I don't
have a canopy and its plug and play.
Marc is the man, so trust his advice as well.
