View Full Version : Aquarium Smell Problems...
Hey,
I just got my first 10 gallon aquarium last Wednesday (5 days ago). I
let the water set-up for 24 hours before putting my two fantail
goldfish and one black moor in the tank. Everything seemed to be fine
on Friday afternoon when I left for the weekend, but since I'm back, my
entire dorm room smells like a tire store, or burned rubber. The fish
still seem healthy and content, though. It's pretty obvious that the
smell stems from the fish tank, but what is causing this problem? I've
seen many threads that say sometimes you get a rotten egg or manure
smell, but I truly don't know what either of those smell like. Any
suggestions on how to get rid of this smell?

Put carbon in the filter, you do have a filter?
Carbon will absorb lots of stinky stuff and water impurities.

Possibly a filter/impeller issue? Burned rubber sounds likely
mechanical to me - not related to the water, but to the filter
components.

I did a partial water change, about 40%, and then checked the filter.
On the back side of the filter was a ton of food, I assume this is
where the smell was coming from. Let me tell you, there's nothing
quite like rotting fish food. I attribute this to my girflriends
OBSESSION with feeding the new fish. I have let her know not to
overfeed the fish since the smell has bothered her the most! Thanks
for your help guys. This message board rocks.

Too many fish for a 10 gallon!!!! way too many fish!!!!! Sorry but GFs are
really dirty fish and produce HEAPS of waste....1 goldfish per 10 gallons is
the standard...My 14 goldfish each have 14 gallons..
Just thought you might know to avoid any losses, thats all.
Check that your air pump diaphram isn't melting...it happens

Maybe the filter is getting the food before the fish do.
I turn my power filter and air pump off for about 10 minutes, until the fish are done eating.
I use programmable devices with timers to control the power filter, air pump and lights.
Feed them Broccoli. I feed 1 golf ball size of frozen Broccoli to my 3
1-inch long comet goldfish. It takes them 2 days to pick the Broccoli
apart. I was amazed at how fast they are growing. The veggie will
probably be a lot less polluting compared to flakes. Probably much
cheaper too. BTW, I also feed a little flakes each day. Balanced diet
you know.
