View Full Version : Dissolving silicone

Hello again!
I've heard that metho dissolves fresh and cured silicone because silicones
are metho based. Since metho is an alcohol it evaporates into the air....
The reason i ask this is because someones just pulled a tank appart (used
metho to do it)...
Since it is an alcohol and not mineral oil based (like turps), does it get
diluted easily by water?

I think you mean "methanol" ? Chemically, it would be a bit of a
stretch to say that "silicones are [methanol] based", but it would
take a few hours to explain properly!

There are a variety of different types of silicone, and they interact
with solvents in different ways. I would not be surprised if methanol
absorbed into the silicone and caused it to separate from the glass.
Acetone would probably do that too (acetone is the recommended cleanup
for silicone bath caulking).

Yes, methanol is fully miscible with water.

In my experience with fresh and set silicone - only Mineral Turps dissolves
it. Metho does jack.... ;)

I did mean methylated spirits...i was just being lazy ;-)
I did a bit of testing on an old piece of glass with fully set silicone and
parially set silicone. After i found out what this person did, so i was
naturally intrigued...
My finds were..
Metho did make the job of unsticking the glass and cleaning off the cloudy
residue with or without a glass cleaning razor very easy....and since it is
alcohol based, it evaporates (just like the drink at the Unibar...)
Mineral turpintine, on the other hand, took alot more work to get cloudy
residue off the glass....and since it is minerla oil based, i wouldn't try
to take appart a massive tank I couldn't carry because being mineral oil
based, it did leave residue...
I think when i said most silicones....i was probably talking about the ones
that i use which are neutral cure and not acetic cure....
Make sense?

Yes - I dismantled a 4ft tank that cracked it's bottom pane - I used mineral
turps to seperate the panes, scraped with a blade, then finished off with
methalyted spirit to get anything the turps left behind. But only the turps
actually dissolved the stuff.

100% acetone works fine.......You can get it where ever paints etc are
sold or at most beauty supply shops, which is where i buy mine at that
I use........Its half the price as it is in big box stores for the
same exact 100% acetone, which does not leave a residue.
I also use methylchloride, but its probably not available in
Austrailia, as they seem to ban most everyting thats good and handy in
the line of chemicals. ;-)

Methyl chloride is quite toxic, it is also a persistant pollutant if
released into the environment. With adequate care and proper disposal it
can be used, but in the hands of "Joe Everybody" I would prefer safer
alternatives.

Water in the hands of an idiot is dangerous as well......so is eating
too many jelly donuts.

Yeah, but neither of those are persistent pollutants or known or
suspected carcinogens, and neither contribute to ozone depletion in
the upper atmosphere. If you don't have the means to dispose of
methylchloride safely, you really shouldn't be using it!

You can get MC in as little as a 5 cc vial which if left ofpen more
than about 5 minutes would be evapoprated, and it only takes a little
bit to do the job............of which 5cc would be more than
sufficeint. Like I said too many jelly donuts are just as bad, it
crerates excess wastes and polutatants as well..Its just how much of
this enviromental crap they shove down yur thorat that you believe and
to what extent.....
Hey even drinking water and just about 99.99999% of every natural, or
manmade item or substance is known to be caricogenic to those living
in Kalifornia.........England and lots of other states are about as
bad as Kalifornia in their assinine so called stringent Enviro laws,
yet industry does waht idustry does best.....without any hassles for
the most part. IMHO its 99% eyewash and bull..........and only those
they want to come down on for infractions are prosecuted for poluting
and unsafe standards. Years back it was bacon is a carcinogenic
source, then butters, and no telling what else. Everyone has a soap
box what is good and bad, and I have yet to see all this so called
stuff be as bad as some claim.......Proper proecess in using MC and
its like going to church........but then again roofs fall in on
churches too........I sure am glad I am not so paranoid on what will
or won;'t bite me in the but as some folks are.
