Hey everyone...

I started cycling my 750L on Saturday. I've been doing everything accrding
to the instructions, adding the ammonia everyday (been using seachems
ammonia alert as a guide) To my total amazment, my readings are....
NH3/4= 6.1
No2=0.3
No3=5-10
ph =7.2

Temp is 28c (81f)

Is this normal???

Well, you need to provide more details like how long have you been at
it.

Since this Saturday actually...(26th)
Water airated, running 2 aquaclear 500s, light from 7am-10:30pm, added cycle
to kick off, started with sterile tank, add 25ml of ammonia (48% ammonia)
every day..
umm...i don't know what more I can tell you.

Did you test at the start and find 0 nitrate, or could there have been
some in your tapwater?

Nope, not normal, and the give-away is the NO2. I would definitely stop
adding ammonia.and let the system settle down, but overall, it looks like
something was not as sterile as you thought ;~).

Is this tank in a fishroom? I suspect that the concentration of airborne
nitrifying bacteria in fishrooms is much higher than typical.

No...the tank isnt in a fishroom...its in my room. I do have a 40L betta
tank and my goldfish are in a kids pool in tha same room.....

How long do i let the system settle.....ive fishless cycled heaps of times
and this hasn't happened,,,

First time for everything ;-)

In a previous post to this thread he "added cycle to kick off" but did
not say how much. If he followed directions, and the Cycle bottle was
fresh, he should have a fully cycled tank in 24 hours.

I didn't think that the addition of Cycle was very pertinent (based on my
familiarity with this product) however it's possible that Hagen has
revised the recipe, and increased its effectiveness. I won't make any
snap judgements either way, but currently the only bacteria starter which
has a reputation for working in 24 hours is Bio-Spira.

It settles when the NH3 and NO2 is zero. Based on your numbers, it
shouldn't take too long (a week?). Definitely keep us posted.

I think i "sneezed" when i added the ammonia....(way too much),,,,i guess i
have been doing alot of things backwards lately.... :-)

Readings for today are
NH3/4=6.1 (its as high as the test will go)
N02=0.8-1.3
N03=10-20
Ph low=7.8
Ph high=8

I am curious what color your Seachem Ammonia Alert indicator is with this
level of Ammonia.
(I believe it only measures free Ammonia, not total Ammonia)

My Ammonia Alert was grey during cycling, then the water started clearing
up, and the indicator has been yellow (safe) ever since.

I test the indicator occasionally over a bottle of Windex, and it goes
through the entire spectrum of colors and turns dark blue in about 30
seconds, so I believe it is working.

Its dark blue at the moment.

Are there any tests that measure above 6.1...
Can i do a water change of say 40% to knock down levels?

I think the Ammonia Alert indicator registers TOXIC (dark blue/purple)
after 0.5mg/L (please verify).
Is there a reason to ever have 6ppm Ammonia in any tank?

blue sky

The ammonia alert only detects free ammonia, not total ammonia. My alert is
on yellow (safe) while my kit reads ammonia @ 2.4ppm

usually a reading over 6 is experienced in fishless cycling as a spike.
