View Full Version : Yellow water?!?!?!?
Tre' Landrum
March 31st 05, 04:47 AM
I help with a friends tank. Recently I went there and the water was yellow.
He said it had been that way since I did a partial water change a month ago
or so. I looked at some water I had mixed up at the same time (about a month
ago). When I mixed it up last month it looked fine. Now I have already
dumped the rest of the salt and done a small water change. I plan on doing a
series of small water changes. Here is my questions: 1) do I need to do a
larger water change (like 50+%) The fish seem to be fine. 2) what in the
world happened to my salt?!?! It was instant ocean, and only a few months
old. It had never been opened.
I don't think it really affected the fish that bad, but it sure looked bad.
Thanks for any help with this mystery.

But what the heck is it? The water sitting in a bucket with nothing organic

nope, 9 years and counting for me..... this tank isn't mine. But it is
getting better.... carbon didn't seem to help... but really not sure as I
started water changes slowly.... it is getting better as the new salt
replaces the old. Still one of the weirdest things I have seen. It just
turns yellow! (and I would go with more of a bright urine color... than
beer... maybe a dark ale)

Could this be due to an algae bloom, or could it even be the
result of overfeeding with a specific food?
A couple of years ago, my son's tank was pretty green
looking, and the skimmate was coming out as glowing neon
blue. I couldn't figure it out! People told me my tank was
full of phytoplankton and not to worry about it.
Finally one day it wasn't green. Now it was pink! Turns
out my son had used up all the Formula Two pellet food, and
was now using Formula One pellet - in abundance. The
pigment was a result of heavy overfeeding. (rolls eyes)

Thought maybe it was something of the like... but the bucket of water I had
mixed up the week before had turned the same yellow. It was the same 5 gal
bucket I have used for years. I don't know what it was... something in the
salt. I bought a new bag and it was fine. Instant Ocean. Must be some
inorganic....weird stuff.
