Thought it had cycled... now, it's like a sandstorm!

Hi all.

I recently purchased a nice new 55 gallon tank for my two goldfish. I
transferred some water and media from the old tank to the new, added
some plants and got everything ready. Three weeks later, levels looked
fine, and I moved the boys in. Now, three days later, the water is as
cloudy as I've ever seen it and the fellas are looking a little
distressed to say the least! Nit. levels don't seem too bad, but this
can't be good?!

Should I start doing frequent water changes? Or is this bloom likely to
be friendly bacteria?

Any help much appreciated!

Keith,

I would've moved the fish in within 1-2 days of filling the tank up, would've
given your media you moved food to convert. You are likely going through a mini
cycle. What are you ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels? 10-20% changes every
couple of days won't hurt if you don't have test kits.

Hi again,

Don't have my test handy here at work. It was only those little test
strips, but both came up fairly neutral. I did seed the tank with a
little food every few days. Do you think it could be the plants which I
moved in only recently?

It could be. If your fish don't look stressed then don't worry about it too
much.

By waiting so long to put your fish in, your good bacteria died (they
had nothing to eat!!) You needed to move the fish within 48 hours to
keep your bacteria colony alive. So now you are cycling your tank all
over again. So sorry. I know this is stressful.
