Many people really like feeding live food to Oscars and other preaditor
fish. But they have a problem since many feeder goldfish are sickly or
full of parasites. So I was wondering, what do you guys think of
raising a fast-reproducing speacies of fish only for the purpose of use
as fish food. I was just wondering, as I'm a long way off from ever
having to implement such a system.

Thanks for the input.

Hmm... why does it matter to me what you do with your fish behind your
own closed doors? You must do whatever is comfortable to you.

You know, you could raise earthworms and mealworms and have a great live
foods for your Oscar and many other predatory fish.

Ethics aside, do the math and figure out how big a set-up you need, to
provide a steady supply of live fish to your Oscars. Generally, the
total volume of your spawning/grow-out tanks will be *at least* as large
(and probably much larger) than the main tank holding the predators.

I think it's a great idea to provide live 'supplemental' foods, and I'd
consider using lower life forms (shrimps, worms, insects etc) for it.

Put some guppies/platys/mollies in the tank. What the oscars don't eat,
the parents will :-).

I would have said.. "What the parents don't eat, the Oscars will",
... but eventually (between 2 seconds and 2 months depending on their age)
the Oscars will eat *all* the guppies/platys/mollies anyway, so it's a
mute point ;~).
