View Full Version : Suggestions for new fish at Ph7.8

Well it's time to make another addition to my 29Gal tank.
However since my Ph is 7.8 I am looking for suggestions
from some of the more experienced fish keepers out there.
I currently have:

5 Zebra Danio's
3 Female Guppys (and 14 fry)
1 Pleco

Water Stats:
Ammonia:0ppm
Nitrite:0ppm
Nitrate:20ppm
Temp: 79F
Hardness: Liquid Rock!

Plants:
Cryptocoryne Affinis
Hornwort
Ananchilis(sp?)

Since all my fish are fairly small I would like to add something
bigger but less than 6-8" that will also eat guppy fry and will not
have problems with my water conditions.

Thanks!

Peter

Rainbowfish do very well in harder water. Male salmon red rainbows
(Glossolepis incisus), Melanotaenia bosemani, and fish in the
Melanotaenia splendida species complex like Checkerboard and Eastern
Rainbows are some of my own favorites. Here's a great website on
rainbows. http://members.optushome.com.au/chelmon/

However, most fish will be fine in pH 7.8 - sof****er species just won't
breed. The only fish that sometimes have trouble are the extremely
sensitive ones like rams, discus, or wild-caught fish. You could try a
blue, gold, or pearl gourami, an angelfish (expert baby guppy eaters),
or even a couple of clown loaches. I'm sure other folks will chime in
with more suggestions because there are so many interesting fish you
could successfully add to your tank right now.

My water pH is 7.8. Here is a list of the fish in my 5 tanks:

Black Angelfish
Black Lyre Mollies
Bleeding Heart Tetra
Blue Gouromi
Clown Loach
Harlequin Raspora Cyprinids
Juli Cory Catfish
Platies, Top sail
Plecostomas, Marbled
Red Serpae Tetras
Swordtails
White Clouds
Zebra Danio
Siamese Algae Eaters

All seem to do fine. The average age (since setup) of the tanks is 2
years. The Platies and Mollies have all had fry (I now have males
separate from females, enough was enough).

Angels aren't too happy at 7.8. They prefer it around 6.5-6.8

Wild caught yes, local breeder no. I keeped Angels in 8.0ph RO softened
water and they breed like rabbits.

I had angels that did just fine in hard water in Baltimore, at pH 7.6.
The silver angels are hardier if you don't mind not having fancy colors
and fins.
