View Full Version : sick platty and guppy, what is it?
Hi,
In my quarantine tank I have a platty and a guppy.
Look at the pictures:
http://photos.yahoo.com/hammerjoe
I've treated them for Ick when I had a breakout in my tank.
The platty is the only one that still shows those white spots and the
gills seem to me to be very red.
The guppy I am not sure what it is, the top of the head just lost it's
color like it's missing scales or something.
Anyone have a clue what's wrong with these two fish?
I also included a picture of my tank, hope you will like it.
I have two plants and the rest are fake... can you spot them? :)
Thanks.

It looks like the Platy still has Ick....don't know about the Gupppy
Thats what I thought, It' been two weeks I started using ick medecine
in the big tank and almost a week that the platty is in the quarantine
tank still treating with medecine.
It's taking a long time.

OK I'm going to be very cautious here....I do not know what is wrong with
your guppy so therefore any I'm not sure if it is a reaction to the ick
treatment or something else. What medication are you treating with?
Ick is carried in the water....the only way of treating it is to zap the
spores with the medication once they drop off into the water rather than
being on the fish themselves. This is why the advice is to raise the
temperature to accelarate the life-cycle of the spores.....which is why I
treat the tank rather than individual fish (BTW currently have an Ick
problem with my Clowns). Recent advice I have been given suggests raising
the temp and doing massive water changes to reduce the number of spores in
the water....but this will depend on the severity of the attack....but of
course if you are using medication this will reduce it's effectiveness....
My advice is to try and find out firstly what is wrong with the guppy and if
any treatment you give for the Ick is the cause of it's problems or
alternatively will adversely affect it's condition.
I can't find anything about the guppy problem... It just doesnt look
natural to me.
I still have ick in my main tank, because my two sherry barbs show
white spots.
I've raised the temp in the tank to 27C hopefully the tank will be rid
of it...
I am treating them with hmmm super ick cure... it's a blueish liquid
that turns the water blue. :)
The platty doesnt show signs of improvement though... wonder why it's
taking so long...

Raise the temperature to around 30 to get the life-cycle of the Ick
sped up. Then the Ick cycle which you observe as white spots on the
fish will "disappear" more rapidly.
I think your guppy has been damaged by either this Ick medication or
other stuff (chemicals) you've been using. Or in combination with too
high concentrations of ammonia, nitrites, nitrates which presumably
you have had in your tank previously. Too large concentrations of
these may irritate the skin of fish, damaging the slime coat and then
the scales, which start falling off. Be aware that I'm guessing on
this, based on your photo of the guppy.

It takes about 3 days for parasites to mature and fall off. Are you
sure what happened to the guppy is new? It looks like healthy flesh and
I wonder if it's not congenital.

My suggestion (and it is only that) is that you move the Platy back into the
main tank and then treat that tank for Ick....there is no point in treating
the fish in isolation as it is the water that carries the Ick that then
attach to the fish. Remember that the only time that medication/chemicals
for treating Ick is really effective is when the spores are in the water
rather than on the fish themselves.
Keep the Guppy in the "hospital tank". My guppies have no ill effect from
Ick treatment but we can't rule this out. Additionally as Derek says there
may be other factors that are contributing here. Until you are certain of
the diagnosis of the Guppy you are best off treating with something like
"Stress Coat" or equivalents. As you have had the Platy with Ick in the
same tank you need to be prepared for the possibility that there are Ick
spores in the hospital tank. As you do not know whether or not it was the
Ick treatment that has caused the problem go for the option of higher temps
and daily water changes to get rid of the Ick unless you see specific
symptoms on the Platy...ie. white spots

I'm not sure Elaine... I don't recall seeing the guppy like that, that
is why I got alarmed.
The guppy is not acting weird or anything, I don't know...

I think your guppy is fine, and either got injured and lost scales
somewhere along the way or was born without the scales. I wouldn't
worry about him unless the top of his head starts to redden or fungus.
