I've recently noticed a creature on my live rock. It seems to be nocturnal
and sort of looks like a leach. It has browish and white stripes. He
crawls for cover when the lights come on. Any ideas on what this is? Is it
harmful? Should I get it out of my tank next time I see it?
Thanks!

If it's orange and red, and looks like it has bristles, it's probably a
bristle worm.
Good detrivore, cleans up bottom of tank.
Not a pest unless you get too many, and that's usually from overfeeding.

Large ones will munch on corals, but otherwise they're great to have
around.

Thanks guys. It doesn't have bristles though. It's smooth and a lot wider
than a worm. Any other ideas?
Thanks again.

Does it look anything like any of the critters on this page?

Hi Billy,
Thanks for the link. Yes, my creature is on Page 2 under snails, conchs and
limpets. Fourth row from top (second row from bottom), middle picture.
What is this thing ?
Thanks again!

Put your cursor on the photo and hold it there for a few seconds. The center
photo in the 4th row is labeled "lettuce nudibranch." IMO, that's a nice
hitchhiker to have picked up.

My creature turns out to be a keyhole limpet (Thanks George, I didn't
realize that the name would come up if I held it on the picture). Are these
harmful?
Many thanks!

Click the pic, it opens a new window with info. If you have a popup
blocker you will have missed this. Here it is:
Keyhole Limpets move about the reef, substrate and even glass. Their
body is protected by a cone-like shell that has a small hole at the
apex or top. When extended, some display a delicate lace-like fringe
or skirt. I have had a few of these over the years, and usually they
are about .75" to 1.5" in size. Many babies about 1/8" appear in the
sump, refugium and plumbing. Reef-safe.

Maddie, next time you are on that page, click on the smaller
image for a larger one with more information. Be sure you
have your pop-up stopper turned off.
