View Full Version : Skilter 400 Skimmer suggestions

I recently got a new Skilter 400 for my 55g sal****er tank. I wasn't to
fond of the loud noise it made when installed, so according to the
suggestion in instructions i put a airstone in the bottom of the tube.
After running for a week nothing is in the cup on top. So today I
replaced the stone with a coralife limewood airstone "premium grade"
with hopes to make it work better. My tank has been established since
the first of the year, should it be producing foam in the top yet? Do I
need a bigger airpump? Or maybe add another stone? Thanks

I've got a skilter filter, but the only thing I use it for is for water
movement. It isn't strong enough for a 55 gallon reef tank. At least that has
been my experience.

I dont use the skilter for the filter part really, I have an
aquaclear110 (500) that I'm using as my primary filter. I just got the
skilter for the skimmer function.

To be honest, IMHO the skilter has one of the poorest skimmers of any
filter on the market.
For a 55 gallon, I would suggest a CPR backpak 2 skimmer as about the
best for the lest amount of mondy.

OneZero,
Box it up and take it back! I have had nothing but problems with them since
they came out. Definitely not a good enough skimmer for a 55 reef.

I've found most airstone powered skimmers are rather poor, the best
of them being sufficient for the lightest FOWLR tanks, the worst of
them, (skilters) being good for very little. Look at CPR skimmers for
a 55 reef. When asked about skimmers, I tell people it's the
singlemost critical part of a reef system, and you should buy the
absolute best one you can. When you buy the skimmer, it should cause
physical pain to look at the price, though the CPR skimmers are
damned good for thier price. <g> You'll never regret it.

The Remora Aqua C with the Maxijet 1200 pump would do nicely on a 55. IMO
it's better than the BakPak.
