View Full Version : White Dots on Rocks, not Fish!

A few days ago, I noticed a dozen or so white dots (about the size of a
pencil point) on a piece of slate I have in my aquarium. I would have
thought it was Ich, except that the dots were on a rock and not on a fish.
I did not see any dots on any fish. I didn't have time to do anything about
it that day, but when I did a partial water change the next day, the dots
were gone.

I did have a couple of fish deaths in the past two weeks, but neither showed
signs of Ich. Lacking other ideas, I've attributed the deaths to
overfeeding and high nitrates (40 ppm). (I've cut way back on the feeding
and have the nitrates down to 10 ppm with water changes.)

Anyone have any ideas as to what the spots were?

Thanks,
Dave

If they are in a sort of "clear-sac" they would most probably be snail
eggs. However you said they were on a piece of slate, do you at all
have angelfish in the tank, if so, they maybe eggs from the angels.
Just a thought...

Could this be the beginning of algae spores? They usually are white in the
beginning.

No, they really were white. The tank has just Platys and a Cory. (Need to
get more Corys for company when the local shop has them in.) No snails,
either. (And nothing recently introduced to bring them in.)

Dave
