When water evaporates it leaves all impurities behind right? Knowing
this, I should NOT condition my water with fertilizers ect. when I top
off the tank, right?
Just a quick thought.

True, and you want to top off fish only tanks with distilled or RO water
if you're keeping sof****er fish. For hardwater fish, it's less of an
issue because you do reduce the salt buildup with water changes. Some
planted tank folks also top up with tapwater because the plants use up
the minerals in the water.
