View Full Version : Who's larva exactly?

Just checked on one of my tanks before going to bed. Freaky goings on,
that's all I can say. I can just barely make out stuff at one side of
the tank using a permanent led fixture I have there. Sort of a moonlight
glow. All other lights are off. Eeeeeeeeeeeek! What is that!?
What the hell is this in my tank?! (taken in almost pitch black)
http://www.ncasali.demon.co.uk/Shrimp/images/Larva.jpg
Surely, it can't be a shrimp larva?! It doesn't look right. Although you
won't see this in the photo, it's got three transparent tail fins. A
shrimp has one that is slightly angled in the centre.
It's also very creepy. It moves with this slow deliberate motion, like a
sloth. Also, I'm sure I saw it do a sprint by curling and uncurling its
body very quickly like mosquito larvae do.
Two years ago, I'm quite convinced a fly laid eggs and the larvae
hatched in one of my tanks. I saw one of the larva swimming about. A few
weeks later there was a living nymph in my external canister filter. It
was alive and trapped in the filter wool.
Oh crap! I've just read that if the larva has three tails then it's a
mayfly.
Got to do some more research. I don't want live nymphs eking out an
existence in my filter, thank you.

What do you think? Heck, I think I've got dragon fly larvae in my tank.
Strange, I thought fish liked this sort of thing as a snack. Damn
watersprite is too dense.

Out of curiosity, do you get dragonflies in your house? I get
craneflies and mayflies but I've never seen a dragonfly indoors. I vote
for mayfly, especially because the site you mention says they have gills.
I also bet it becomes fish food. Interesting, though.

I haven't seen one in over a year. The only fly I've seen recently is a
mosquito. I bought some Valisneria two weeks ago. Maybe it came with
those? I was going to do a potassium permanganate dip, but Valisneria
are sensitive to it.

If it's a dragonfly then I'm worried as they apparently eat small
ornamental fish. And my shrimp are pregnant too. But I'm not so sure
whether it will be eaten too quickly. I have three little SAEs, three
cherry barbs and one big chinese algae eater who is a bit unimaginative
about where it can get its food. It practically just sits there waiting
for me to drop in the flakes. I'll cut down the watersprite giving the
larva less vegetation to hide in.

Well, can you catch it? I'd take it out of the tank if it might eat
fish. If you're opposed to killing it, set it in a breeding trap or a
jar and feed it fish food.

Ok, just caught it. I can see it's got little wings on its back and
three feathery tails. It's demon!
I'm putting it with my redtailed shark who's in the quarantine. I'll
keep the nymph in a net overnight in case it doesn't acclimatise. The pH
in the quarantine is over 8.4.
Any entomologist frequenting this forum who have an idea what this could be?

I am absolutely amazed that you have damselflies laying eggs in your
aquarium! Just don't forget to provide it with something to climb up and
out of the water when it needs to turn into an adult - though your page
reminds me that could take a couple of years...
