View Full Version : A quick question I have alwys wanted to ask....
Should I put the dechlorinator in the tank water before topping it off
to make up for evaporation and keep the water safe for fish at all
times, or should I fill first, then put in the dechlorinator? What
about the previous in a water change situation as well? Thanks all!

I put it in before the water. It doesn't do any good while still in
the bottle.

Does not play well with others.

I put it in the water before I add it into the tank but I do use buckets for
refilling....

*I* put it in the replacement water prior to pouring it into the tank.

I use a Python, and I start the new water running, then add the dechlor
while the tank is filling.

Thanks all! I plan on putting it in the tank before topping off for now
on now, later!

I use a Python on my 75 and 29 gal tanks. I don't dechlor at all. I
know my community water supply uses minimum chlorine. I also hav 3
ten gal tanks that I do partials using a bucket, no dechlor for them
either. I have been doing 20% partials twice weekly for over 2 years
with no problems. It sure is nice to not have to add any chemicals,
oh my fish do handle the 7.8 pH so that is where it stays.
I mentioned my method to a friend. She had been adding dechlor
chemicals for years. She stop adding the chemical and quite happy to
do so. I am sure one can't get by this way in every community, but I
sure would suggest checking to see if special handling is needed.

Indeed. One should also take into consideration the sensetivity of
the individual species. I have always added dechlor to the water
before placing it in the tank. I'm not willing to risk the exposure,
even for a short period of time. Of course most of my fish that I
keep now are rather expensive.

I did not use dechlor when I was doing 20% a couple times per week, but now
I do 40-50% once a week so I started adding it.
