View Full Version : filter setups

I am looking to set up a 75 gal tank i purchased a few months ago.
havent really been working on it due to some home remodeling. anyway, I
am going to run twin magnum 350 filters and I am interested in hard
piping the intake and returns rather then use their out of the box
setup. It will make it much easier to get the back of the tank looking
not so cluttered.

has anyone else done this? I would interested in seeing pics of your setup.

THANKS!

Jason

You're speaking of the canister 350's right? I haven't done that with
a magnum, but I have done it with Eheim and fluval canisters with
fine results. The vinyl tubes never satisfy me, particularily after
they;re a few months old and become rigid. No pics, as I've torn them
down since.

Hi Jason - I can't help you with your question, but interested to know about
hard piping. What is it?

TIA - Dave

basically what i am refering to is instead of using the supplied plastic
fittings and hose, use PVC pipe to run all your suction and return lines
from the tank to the filter.

yes the magnum 350 canister filters...i was told these are 10x nicer
then the fluval's and i must say i put one on my 3 gal temporarily until
i get the 5 up and running and i love it!!

i started piping my tank last night and it looks good so far. email me
offlist and i can send you pics of my setup so far..i tried to post them
and it wouldnt let me.

I was REALLY hoping that was a typo...I was picturing a magnum 350 in
a 3gal...messy. :)

dave,

not a problem, the standoffs i used are for 3/4" copper...all the pipe
is 1/2" PVC. I re-thought my original ideas to make the spray bar spray
a couple of bio wheels. i think im just going to drill it and let it go
right to the tank. i should plenty of filtration witht he two big
canister filters i shouldnt need a bio wheel setup.

the only thing i can see maybe a problem is not having enough holes in
the spray bar. but as long as the aera of the holes is the same as the
two main pipes i should have sufficient flow do i dont starve the filters.

Is the inside diameter 1/2"? I would have expected hardpiping as
described to be too restrictive on the canisters, especially after a few
90 degree turns.

If your drilled spray bar is an output, don't glue it as you'll need to
service it periodically.

The 1/2" PVC drinking water pipe is the exact same ID and OD as the
tubing that comes with the filter setup (5/8"ID x 3/4"OD) so there
should be no loss of flow. not to mention even if there is a bit of loss
i will be running twin magnum 350 filters on this 75 gallon tank. which
in reality one filter would work fine as long as the tank isnt overcrowded.

im not gluing any joints. all joints with just be lightly sanded and
wrapped with teflon tape and pushed together. a friend of mine did the
same thing and it works great that way it can be taken apart for
servicing the system.

That should work nicely. I was thinking about 1/2" CPVC which is
actually 7/16 ID.

Interesting, I'd be a little worried about it opening, but I suppose you
can arrange it so gravity pushes sections together and not apart (so any
movement from vibration tightens the fittings).
