Well, I purchased a good looking Sarasa Comet that was being real
friendly in the tank at Walmart, and a Koi (butterfly, mottled), that
the lady talked me into. They are each in the 3" range, and I am
basically (except for my dumb luck successful aquarium as a kid) a rank
newbie.
I have read up on the internet regarding the nitrogen cycle and am
underway with cycling the 10 gal tank I was sold (I know, I know).
I bought the fish because I liked the idividual fish, not because I had
any interest in entering the hobby. I could give them away now and be
done with the hassle, but I am hoping to find a way to keep them
indoors, I live in the snowy mountains, so racoons, hawks and ice
preclude my setting them up in a pond.
I am planning to pick up a 55 gallon tank/stand this week, and get them
relocated. I hope this tank will work for a couple of years for the two
fish.
I am willing to go up to the 120 gal all glass aquarium (48x24x24) with
an overflow sump if they make it that long.
I haven't seen a whole lot of enouragement in my reading, but I thought
I would throw my ideas out there and see if anyone thinks there is a
reasonable chance of success for my new friends ("flippy" and
"flappy").
They really are a couple of cool and very friendly fish...
One additional question I have is that I was told by the fish store
today that I should only feed them every three days (!). Is this
possibly correct? Also, I am hoping that in a tank the koi will only
grow to around 16" or so, is this possible, or do they all hit 24"?
